Article SMH : Book flights now or pay the price
I could not see if includes taxes charges baggage and dealer delivery was included in those banner prices. Australia is nowhere near Europe or America, in terms of getting a no hassle ticket on short notice.
I don't think airfares have hit rock bottom.
They way I see it, is that ticket prices are a complicated set of terms and conditions, with the airfare thrown in.
Many people and Families are not buying because of 'negative experiences'- like missing checkin by a few minutes and being totally shafted. I think Australians have the least tolerance to their mistakes, bar a few pommy easyjet whingers. If they had got a 'Fair Go' , then maybe feelings would not be so injured.
Right now, the Airlines don't feel the need distinguish themselves, by showing user friendliness with date change flexibility, not hard cough gorillas.
I suggest the indication that airfares are rock bottom - is when they do a 'Ryanair' That is cancel flights, leave planes on the ground, and ring people up to say change or money back. Ryanair did not get its own way, but airport valuations are down too.
All the romantic or tropical holiday good feeling illusion evaporated when Airlines rolled over to 911 style airport security, which they thought was good, as it killed ticket resale, then allowing ratcheting taxes and charges to destroy their business models over boom years.
The Airport has become a giant shopping centre, with some runways attached. It is also a loathsome killing zone, with cruel resource rents leading to overpriced everything.
So far, KL LCC and Singabore are the only people to wake up and stop the rot - eh maybe Thailand after bouts of poor PR on the nightly news.
Sure, there are a few good deals, but the prices suggested are those where the dates are scrawled in blood. Also none of these deals cover 'peak' dates like July or December/Jan Yet.
Asian flights are still too dear (except JQ to Japan, which seems too cheap), while some tempters, like AirAsia, loose out by having promotions that are cherry picked in the first 5 minutes - Same for JQ.
Is Qantas still parking lower paying passengers on codeshare JQ?
I'm not aware of standby tickets, except for airline staff, another lost opportunity.
