Hi does anyone have any experience interlining baggage from MH to another OW carrier on separate tickets out of Australia (preferably Perth)?

I was thinking of booking

MH out of Perth, then connecting to KA in KUL with slightly over 1 hour connecting time.

Will need my luggage checked through to have any hope of making it.

I have done this ex-SIN before. but I am not sure if the MH agents in Australia are clued up?

Presumably you're referring to through-checking of baggage.

From memory, MH is one of the airlines that has rightly ignored the ridiculous oneworld policy so I expect you would be fine.

That is correct, I used it December last year without fuss MH-QF

Confirmed - source is below (scroll to the bottom).

Only issue is, as you've eluded to - I'm assuming MH don't employ check in staff in Australia and it's contractors wearing MH uniforms - so they may be rusty on the details. KUL isn't the easiest port to get to from Australia so I assume most people flying through KUL on single MH tickets - this probably doesn't come up often.

Of course it's a different story for the return legs.

Indeed i am aware of the official MH policy (and took advantage of it in SIN)

But I am unsure if the MH agents in Australia would necessarily be clued up. Anyone have experience ex- Australia?

That would be my concern also - just save that link in your phone and show it to them if you get any issues.

I'd more concerned if the general aviation world policy was to not through-check. My understanding is oneworld's policy is against the norm and so I wouldn't expect you'd have any issues with MH contract ground staff in PER. Even if you do have issues, just show them the aforementioned MH page.

My main concerns would be the one hour on separate tickets, but assume you've thought of that, and secondly whether your bags will make it, even if through checked (on same or different tickets). MH at KUL are notorious for their inability to have bags make short connections ( or may be it's just short connections to SIN they don't go to well on, as there are so many flights between the two airports). In any event I'd carry some essentials in hand luggage just in case.

Ive had no problems interlining at KUL for KUL(MH)SIN(QF)MEL(QF)SYD separate tickets

Same here as Quickstatus. I've had boarding passes issued by MH for multiple segments along with the through checking of bags. Separate tickets and PNRs but all OW. An hour to change at KUL is good enough if your inbound is on time, even moreso if in the same terminal, which the above flights MH PER-KUL and KA KUL-HKG would be ('Main' terminal). Just watch for gate security as it can take a long time to get through, and gets a bit stressing sometimes!

Cheers,
Matt.

An hour change is fine for same tickets. Experienced travellers are aware of the risks of travelling on separate tickets, but for those who are not, one hour can be a risk. If travelling on different tickets, it pays to have a plan B in case inbound flight is running late, that is all, as the airline will probably not look after such a passenger in the event of a misconnect..

True... it's tight, I agree. My note does presume the through-check is successful and BPs issued at check-in, which it should be for MH > KA.

Ah it would involve a change from Main (737) to Satellite (KA) terminals :)

Thanks to all others who have replied. I am comfortable with a 1 hour connection at KUL (of course I need my my bags are through-checked in PER). Even if luggage misconnects, it is fine as I live in HKG (in fact - even better as I can go home ASAP lol and wait for them to deliver the luggage to my door).

As an aside, the quirk I have here is
- the ticket actually had me flying PER-xKUL-PEN. Whereas I want to dump the PEN leg and connect onto my KA flight (may need to pay some $$$ to move the PEN leg which I am trying to avoid).

Thanks for all the replies - will see how this goes!

Interesting... the various flight status data says both come and go from Terminal M, but it's not hard to get to Satellite quickly, anyway. It sounds like you know what you're doing. Good luck! ;)

Cheers,
Matt.
