Agents are trained to be very carefull; it can cost the Airline mucho moolah if an inbound PAX gets rejected on arrival immigration ... it's better to be on the safe side.

Yes, for the first poster, airlines certainly wouldn't want to fall fowl of US immigration. But for NZ??? Not going to cost that much moolah to get someone back to AUS from NZ if they were rejected, although chances are that most Australian citizens will sail through (And I do realise that NZ can reject Australians with a criminal record IIRC.. but thats irrespective of return ticket or not)

Its not the cost of the flight that is the issue, it is the fine imposed on the airline for taking the passenger that is fairly high

Aah ok fair enough. I assume though if an Aussie passport holder was actually moving to NZ and did not have/ had no plans of purchasing a return ticket, one could escalate the situation to a manager who would know better and would be allow the pax to be checked in. It's not like you'd bother getting a residency visa or anything like that for NZ ..... or am I misunderstanding NZ immigration laws wrt Aussies?
