I thought this article was an interesting read:

"Despite offering some of the lowest airline fares, Allegiant is the nation's most profitable carrier and one of the very few that is growing amid a sharp downturn in travel. While the largest U.S. airlines reported losing billions of dollars, Allegiant profits soared nearly 200 percent in the first quarter to $28.2 million on revenues of $142.1 million."

Allegiant has an interesting business model. They fly to destinations/airports that the major carriers don't service much or at all. Quite a smart idea. They're also really low-cost. For those reasons they don't get many business travellers, but they're not looking for them, evidently.

I flew Allegiant Air last year Santa Maria (SMX) to Las Vegas, the tickets started cheap, however like many LCC's, if want to pick a seat (especially if you are a familiy travelling wanting to sit together) , check luggage the additional charges soon stack up.

I remember the US$19 wound up at around US$60 per ticket. Still, if you travel without checked luggage and don't care where you sit it's very cheap, and they tie in some great accomodation and tour deals.

The flights were on time, plane was clean and staff were very friendly. It was an MD87 which was quiet and comfortable, I remember reading some of the fleet are ex Alaska Airlines.
