My husband and I are due to fly LHR-MEL-SYD next week, and checking the QF page regarding Carry-On Allowance, I note that while the international segment will allow me to take

2 bags at 115cm total dimensions, the domestic allowance is for either 2 bags at 105cm total dimensions or 1 bag at 115cm.

My dilemma is that we will be travelling with 2 x 115cm, 1 x 105cm plus a camera backpack (which should be below the 105cm allowance), so while they will be acceptable for the international flight, they will be oversized for the domestic connection. Will this be an issue or will I need to check 1 of the 115cm bags?

Similarly, we have a checked baggage allowance of 50kg each (I know the int allowance flows through to the dom flight), is there a limit on the number of bags that can be checked, provided the weight stays under the 50kg total? If not, then checking the extra bag in Melbourne won't be an issue and I'll just do that and save the hassle of dealing with it at the gate :)

Finally, since I'm in the process of repacking our suitcases & carry-ons atm (we are spending the week in Oslo as our 2 cats flew out to Sydney on Monday and are now enjoying the hospitality of the AQIS), and can make the necessary adjustments now, can hubby & I pool our baggage allowance (ie 100kg total rather than exactly 50kg each), and does it make a difference if we are on separate PNRs?

Thanks

I've yet to see anybody get out a tape measure at the boarding gate however your carry on items should not exceed 7kg and they must fit into the test unit situated at the boarding gate and no more than two items per person.

There is no limit to the amount of pieces you can have when your ticket is on the weight system so your 50kg allowance could be 5 pieces @ 10kg each.

Just check in at the same time so you'll be linked together then your allowances can be combined so as long as the combined total weight of all your bags doesn't exceed 100 kilos (assuming the 30kg + 20kg extra allowance is correct) you won't have any issues.

Just watch no items exceeds the 32kg OH&S limit and take note that some airlines impose heavy fees on items 24-32 kilos so it's probably better to have more smaller items rather than a few heavy ones.

Thanks for the information ozbeachbabe,

Having repacked & weighed the bags, we will definitely be under the 100kg mark so those won't be an issue - am a little worried about the weight of 1 of my carry-ons but I'm going to tackle that one tomorrow - so all should be good.

My 2 cats are now enjoying the accomodations at the Eastern Creek Quarantine Station, and in less than 60 hours hubby & I will be starting our journey to join them :) (in Sydney not Quarantine I might add)
