I understand Indonesia has a problem with one way tickets - I know Tiger was kicked out over it.

Is it possible to travel holding one way tickets in both directions?

SYD - DPS one way ticketed in AU
DPS - SYD one way ticketed in ID

It's simply to save money on the return portion - Indonesian tickets are ~25% cheaper.

It does seem possible to book one way with Jetstar, though it's possible it may fail at the final payment stage.

I don't see any problems with this. Just make sure you have a copy of the return ticket on hand when you take the outbound flight in case the check-in staff/Indonesian authorities ask to see it.

The Tigerair problem was a completely different issue relating to their operating certificate (which permitted them only to operate charter services, when in fact they were selling tickets to the general public).

+1 for Mattg's advice. I wouldn't have thought this would be a problem.

If you're concerned about payment not being accepted, and assuming you're based in AUS, try purchasing the DPS-SYD ticket first. If it fails, then you're not left holding SYD-DPS tix.

Thanks guys. Seems like I have been misled by quality journalism.

Is there anything else to be aware of? I'm thinking a one way ticket might mean you're less likely to get a hotel in event of a major delay?

To be frank, I think you've been misled by not reading the article properly ;)

You're probably over-thinking the 'consequences' - however, the bottom line is always read the T&C's.

I have been to indonesia dozens of times, Immigration has never asked to see my ticket. (I have had one way tickets around half of these times ) That said, you do need to comply with the conditions of getting the Free Visa (not the VOA) like most countries I guess you must have already purchased your ticket to leave before entry, or demonstrate you have the cash to do so. I suggest reading it so that you are clear on the answer, and even take a print out of the Presidential Decree with you just in case you get taken to the rubber gloves room.

Its not wise to ask the opinions of others, especiallyvwhere immigration seem to apply their own interpretations at times.

One way tickets should be no problem (I did SIN-DPS, DPS-DRW one way tickets in January 2017). Do remember to have a printed copy. Should there be major delays, the Novotel (?) at the airport is reasonably priced. Last I checked (January 2017) it was $35 for half day.

You may be required to show a return ticket (or onward ticket) by your airline at check in in Australia. They like to cover themselves in the (unlikely) event a passenger is denied entry. It's a simple step, you just show the print out of your return ticket.

Two one ways may leave you exposed in the event your return is delayed or cancelled. The airline would assume you have a home at the point of departure. So they may not organise accommodation for you... if they were ever going to do so in the first place (it's becoming increasingly rare, and they'll only do it if for reasons within their control).

You travel insurance will cover delays if you select the appropriate level of cover. This will provide for hotels and meals if the delay exceeds a certain period... usually 6 hours. But will cover weather, ATC, mechanical etc etc.
