My neighbour’s grandson has a strange request for his thirteenth birthday. While staying in Canberra last year he was in a motel where meals were delivered to the room through a hole in the wall/door, as oppose to knocking and waiting for an answer.

It sort of reminds me of the shoeshine boxes I’ve seen in The Peninsula, where you put your shoes in a void between the room and corridor so the staff can shine your shoes for you. Or at least that’s how I understood the system to work.

Anyway, he’s in northern NSW and wants a motel in Brisbane so that he can just sit on the bed and watch TV, have his meals delivered through a hole in the wall and then go to time zone! Ahh for the simple things in life.

I haven’t the faintest clue what to search for to get such a service, but thought the question was appropriate for AFF.

Can anyone offer some suggestions, pointers, help?

I have seen this quite regularly in motels in country towns where breakfast and/or dinner is delivered through the 'hole' in the wall.

I have not come across this in Brisbane but I have not stayed in motels in Brisbane either. Would there be something in the Hamilton area or perhaps something a little further out of the city itself?

I have memories of staying in a hotel in Adelaide when i was young kid (think it was called the insinada or something) and me and my younger sister use to climb in and out through these contraptions...

probably not the most secure thing having a little trap door thing in the side of your hotel room wall...

anyway, no idea what you would look for or if any hotel would advertise this as a feature...

Maybe check out Golden Chain group - I stayed at their Ararat motel a few years back, and they served breakfast via that little "hole in the wall.".

Find one in Canberra, give them a call and ask if they still use, explaining the reasons why. You might get a hit first time. :)

Welcome to Golden Chain

The Quality Inn Presidential in Mt Gambier does this .... they even make sure they look in at you and say 'good morning'. A bit far from Brissy though.

Have experienced this many times over the years, primarily (perhaps exclusively) in country motels. This system seems to be in operation in fewer motels these days, but maybe it just seems that way due to changes to where I stay.

I suspect the only way you're going to know in advance if the motel in question does this is to ring in advance and ask.

It was suggested to me today also that the Hamilton area might be the spot to go door-to-door knocking :p

Great for kids, perhaps that’s the real motivation he has behind the idea ;)

Cool, thanks for the link I’ll have to look through the properties.

That seems a little too personal for my liking, to have someone looking in at you. Been there though, the town that is, nice place.

Certainly seems to be a country thing… so I hope Brisbane is enough of a country town.

Thanks for the stories so far though, seems most have experienced it, but don’t experience it any more.
