I'm surprised this is news. Hotels I've stayed at in NYC have been doing this for years.

Petty yes, but when in do as.

Annoying yes for a 1st world country but not worth wrecking a vacation for.

Matt

These sort of scams are usually exposed quickly on sites like Trip Advisor. If you're booking a room before checking the reviews, consider it a stupidity fee.

I used to stay in Marriots freqently in the US. Just before the stay the concierge would email and ask for any special requests. I always got the mini bar cleared and at that stage at least there was no change.

I take it this happens mostly in the USA?

Part of my conditions for staying at the hotel is a refrigerator I can use. Must pay more attention.

I read of a LAS specific trick years ago where you just contact hotel post booking and request fridge to store your medication - seems it worked in either of 2 ways - if room had pre-stocked fridge it was cleared or hotel would arrange install fridge for duration your stay. Now I have never tried this course of action but I either read it here somewhere or on FT.

Love it :D

And yes, like others I can't see why the Journo thinks this is news.

I have also considered telling hotels that I am a recovering alcoholic. Can someone try it and let us know how they look at you on check in? ;)
