So after many years of flying and being a paid up QP member for nearly 20 years I finally made SG. I'm wondering what I really get for that ? I've had lounge access forever albeit paid and now it's free, that's one. My seat selections are pretty good, tick. I can go through the "priority" security lane, big deal. I'm just feeling a bit underwhelmed ATM, can someone tell me it was all worthwhile ?

Sadly I think gold is the new silver. It doesn't get you in piority boarding lane (international) or any better chance of upgrades. Sorry to bear the news.

QF keep devaluing all there Status's and then making a new one and adding value to that.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If you're gold and want to feel more love - maybe call Ron Paul? Or take a trip to Austria? :)

Can you clarify what has been devalued in the SG status recently? Increase in status bonus and "improved int'l upgrade experience" and introduction of waitlisting for domestic upgrades are the most recent changes I recall.

Not paying for QP works for me!

But that only saves $200 - $400 per year so not really a benefit.

To the OP what were you expecting as a newly minted SG? Rose petals in the premium boarding lanes? Free upgrades? Weren't you also the person who questioned "So what" about better access to overhead bins?

Also more luggage recently. 2x32 instead of 2x23, IIRC

Just think of Gold as the overnight transit on the road to Platinum or Platinum One when Gold/Platinum are merged....

I'm struggling to see the relevance of this comment, what does this have to do with my OP ? And to answer your first point, I didn't expect anything beyond the stated benefits, just asking for people's valid views which is the whole purpose of this forum.

It's $200-$400 a year I don't have to pay. It's the easiest benefit to recognise and realise.

We are greatful for the benefits we receive for Qantas status. They don't need to let you into the QP for free drinks and a bit of food but they do based on a loyalty status system. It is all printed and known so it works for many.
Of course you cannot please all of the people all of the time.......so that is why we have choices.

I'm fine with that so long as I get all the things I do now, but just under a different title. Wouldn't strive for P1 to keep the benefits I have now, would simply stop flying.

Speak of the devil though, sat in the J lounge and I see Mr Joyce on TV, live, right now. I can see Qantas tails and Emirates tails.

If you are flying solely QF and primarily domestic sectors then yes to me QP and SG are much of a much'ness. Points earn = neglgiible. QP access = same. Priority Boarding = negligible.

It is once you start travelling QF long haul that the points earn bonus 75% kicks in and starts adding up faster. And then when you fly non-QF but OW at an overseas ports your SG/OWS allows other benefits that QC does not offer eg. J check in, J lounges, piority boarding.

If you are mainly flying QF dom, seat selection would most definitely be significant.

You also get looked after a bit better when things go wrong.Made a huge difference for a mate when he was impacted by the snow in Europe last year. He was able to get on a connecting flight when non status pax were stranded.QF8 was delayed to Sydney last weekend. Status pax were prioritised in getting domestic seats to connect to JNB. 32 people were left behind. Not quite WP1 but pretty worthwile to my mind.

It won't necessarily just be a new title. It may be the same title as now, Platinum, but with benefits somewhere in between Gold and Platinum.

In the meantime Platinum One will have all the old Platinum benefits plus some new ones.

It is becoming clearer as Platinum One evolves.

Qantas club, better award availability, status bonus. They all work for me :)

Thanks for the replies. I hope the OP didn't come across as a whinge, just wanting to generate some discussion and I'm very happy with my recent seat selections. Anyway, today got an unexpected surprise, for the first time ever, got one of these.

We hope that you have been enjoying the privileges that come with your Gold membership. You may not realise, but you are well on your way to achieving Platinum status.

We'd like to help you reach Platinum status, so we are offering double Status credits* on all eligible^ Qantas flights when you register, book and travel from 3 Sep 2012 until 30 Nov 2012.
