What are people's recent experiences with status recognition (welcome amenities, upgrades, free breakfast etc.) when booking IHG hotel through Qantas Hotels (to make use of discount vouchers)?

Similarly, do such stays earn points/stays to IHG membership account as well as Qantas points through Qantas Hotels?

Don’t expect anything. But you might luck in.

No.

Thanks. Not sure I will get real value from the QF Hotels voucher then, given I can book at a corporate rate that provide full flexibility until day of arrival, room upgrade (thanks to status) and receive free breakfast (thanks to status).

I find that QF Hotels (and Expedia, Booking.com etc etc) come into their own when travelling around outside some of the bigger cities and the usual chain hotels aren’t available or just not convenient. eg on a road trip somewhere.

They can be good QFF points earners also (handy for PC/PC+).

Yes, I agree. Similar I find for using things like Amex Travel Credits.

For the trip I am planning at the moment, there is only one IGH property (Holiday Inn) and it is well priced, but the location is just a little less convenient than other, more expensive non-IHG options. I can use QF Hotels Voucher for the non-IHG properties by they are still around $75/night more expensive. So have to decide if the extra cost is worth the nicer property and more convenient location, earning QFF points but not earning IHG points or stay credit. I am leaning towards non-IHG for this trip (a wedding anniversary weekend away).

Also good when booking for family/friends, or if booking multiple rooms and knowing you won't see benefits/points on more than one.

Though IHG are very generous with multiple rooms as long as you are also staying in the same hotel. Points for up to 9 rooms.

Earning Points on Multiple Rooms: Except at InterContinental Alliance Resorts, Members may earn Points on all Eligible Charges for multiple hotel rooms (up to 9) provided those rooms are used in conjunction with the Member's Stay at the same hotel, and the Member’s IHG One Rewards account number is recorded on each reservation, or the charges from those multiple room reservations are referred to on the hotel room bill associated with the Member's reservation.

I use Qantas hotels when booking a property in a chain I don't have status with (or in a region where the status benefit is minimal i.e accor properties in US usually significantly cheaper via QF hotels). The points earn is decent, you can pay in AUD (so more cc points) and usually generous cancellation terms.

Funnily I have booked 2 IHG properties directly with ihg on my current trip both excluding breakfast as planned to use Diamond breaky benefit, but upon check in was told rate already included breaky so was given other amenities.

Clearly something gets lost between Aussie app and European bookings in our favour.

Whenever I book directly with IHG for family/friends, I get full points and also they get my Diamond / Ambassador perks. I have to be the primary customer on the booking, but I just put one of the other people as a secondary customer so they can check in. :)

Good tactic!

It does require me to pay for the booking in advance, but it's not bad at all... I hate that IHG charge an unspecified merchant fee on top of the quoted price.

Does anyone know if this is prescribed somewhere in the IHG Ts & Cs, or if they are simply not following ACCC guidelines for merchant fees?

Did you realise Qantas hotels are not Qantas hotels? Qantas hands the booking on to Expedia to make the booking. Found this out when travelling recently & my ‘Qantas hotel‘ showed me my booking came from Expedia - with a much lower price on their confirmation email, than I paid to Qantas. Qantas hotels confirmed this is their practice, when I contacted them the next day. Just be aware - I could have paid a lower price for my booking with Expedia and also accrued points with them.

It pays to shop around. TripAdvisor will often show the QF Hotels and Expedia (and other) deals. I use both.

Whenever I've looked, I've actually found Qantas Hotel and Expedia have the exact same pricing. Even the same "member deals" on the same hotels. Likewise with Webjet and Amex Travel (other than their FHR/THC hotels), which also show up as being booked through Expedia.

Skyscanner is a good tool to use too (for hotels)

The only time I consider using Qantas Hotels is when I have a discount voucher available to use. Without a discount voucher I prefer to book direct with the hotel/chain.
