If You've Never Missed a Flight, You're Probably Wasting Your Time

Gage?

There are many factors involved not just time at airport and risk of missing flight. Traffic, security queues, how long to spend in lounge are all factors to consider.

Personally I find arriving ~1 hour before a domestic flight is the optimal point for me. Have a couple of drinks and then board the flight. Spending longer at airport waiting could also mean drinking and eating more which is not desirable. Spending less could mean I risk getting stuck in traffic and not getting to airport on time.

And I have missed quite a few flights for various reasons. It isn't fun but it is a good experience.

The only time I missed a flight was a lightly loaded CX HKG-PEK evening service, because I was enjoying my Cabana bath and took too long to dry off, get changed and walk over to the gate - because of the light load they had no reason to wait around. But I got to the gate and the next flight was already displayed, but as soon as I approached the counter they guessed my name and after a few minutes handed me a BP for the next flight. That too was also basically empty - my estimate was about 75 people on an A330.

Only time I've missed a flight was when we flew into SYD to find a certain TV show filming and a queue if people snaking all around the baggage hall. Even with the 2 hr buffer we always allow, we missed our domestic flight to ADL by 45 minutes. SYD really needs to review its quarantine process - nightmare doesn't even begin to describe it! Expansion of the area and additional personnel would be the first thing I'd implement if it was in my power. :D
