Ideas for a short trip?

Hey everyone,

I need a 4-5 days short trip from Melbourne overseas leaving up to 11 Jan or so. Cant find any cheap flights anywhere, any ideas where I can go / find cheap or award flights?

Not cheap and not technically overseas, but what about Christmas Island? It’s very adventurous, lots Of outdoor activities and should have crabs everywhere at that time of year. The island population is heavily Chinese/Malay so the food is great, there’s a pub in the beach and outdoor cinema. Plenty to do.

If it’s for visa reasons, then wouldn’t NZ be the simplest/direct option from Melbourne? I wouldn’t be hoping for any reward flights at that time of year though.

Absolutely NZ is your best option, given the number of flights to/from there and the options you have for using FF points in different programmes (Qantas, Virgin [Queenstown only], Star Alliance). To significantly increase your chances you should be willing to transit in another city such as Sydney. Qatar also flies daily from Adelaide on a 777 so that may be an option for at least finding Economy reward seats.

Having said all that — it’s a peak period and flights are generally very full at the moment. Your best bet is almost certainly last-minute availability.

EDIT: I've just checked the Virgin Australia website and there are plenty of economy reward seats available on the Qatar flight between Adelaide and Auckland, in both directions, for many dates in January. 20,000 Velocity points each way, plus taxes.

Not sure if you're travelling with family or not, but if you don't need to travel in school holidays, consider travelling in the week or two before xmas.

That will bring the prices down. From Xmas to late Jan is looking to be a travel madhouse this year!

Reads as if a a visa run. Do you have a passport/visa for NZ entry?
webjet.com.au will give a guide of prices over a month. NZ is not cheap at this time

20k seems expensive for cattle to AKL.
I got ADL - MEL - SIN - REP next year for about 50k + $400 in J with SQ (VA to MEL). I was actually surprised by the amount of availability.
