I think I've become an intolerant QP snob!

Sitting in the QP in Perth at the moment... Something I seem to do every month or two these days.

I don't know whether the large FIFO presence here is getting louder, more boisterous and less caring about dress standards or whether i've become an intolerant snob, but gee I wish there was a J lounge/Plat/Emerald lounge here.

I assuming/hoping the FIFO's wouldn't be joining me there.

(Food offering at lunchtime is on a downhill slide here IMHO as well, seeing as I'm having a useless whine)

Its the FIFOs that are probably keeping QF in the air though...

Ahhh FIFOs, the great equaliser of the travelling classes. I mean what can you do? If you can't beat them with SCs, maybe they should have a private airport club where only people who attendend certain schools or unis could obtain access? Just a thought. Here's another random one: could pink hi-vis be the equivilent of the pink business shirt craze of recent times? You read it here first.

A lot of the FIFOs would probably be in the J lounge with you!

but gee I wish there was a J lounge/Plat/Emerald lounge here.

A hell of a lot of the FIFO's are WP, so I doubt you would get any respite.

There has been much discussion around POHVWWS^ and how it affects other lounge patrons.

^Proliferation Of High Vis Work Wear Syndrome. - Commonly pronounced "Povewees"
Use example: "Poor show old chap, the povewees is bad today"

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Just be careful-I might be working in Karratha next year.Though i dont think I will be in Fluoro!

I've been known to wear hi-viz in the J lounge and my CL boss in the CL. It's not what you wear it's how you behave. Even had to do an international J leg in yellow hi-viz when I rushed from site to plane and had nothing to change into. How I enjoyed the looks of the fellow pax....

More seriously, I believe the plans for BNE include a discrete FIFO terminal/zone to address this issue and something similar is in the plans for the Perth development

I've found BNE QP to be worse dress-wise. Stubbies, a wife beater singlet and thongs seems to be a summer uniform there.

As I quite often complete day trips to and from the Pilbara I see plenty of FIFO heavy times and plenty of DYKHIA Suit times. Sure the suits look better than the Hi-Vis gear but the people in them are just as, if not more, inconsiderate of others the the Hi Vis crowd. Not sure a J Lounge would change it as the Hi Vis guys would nail the status requirements easily. Looks like you'll just have to live with it.

Not sure how much "have to live with it" goes.

There are dress regulations - if these would bar hi-viz, it seems they are rarely enforced.

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Unfortunately, not all miners are like that.... its always the minority which spoils it for the majority.

I'm a 'miner', abit my flights are usually day trips or overnighters to site,

Yes they are bogans and yes their behaviour is outright disgusting and is mostly contributed to alcohol (the same problems exist even outside the QP), however not all badly behaving patrons in the QP are miners!

And yes most of them/us are SG/WPs so there is no escape, maybe at the Virgin lounge?

I've been FIFOing on and off for more than thirty years and never once felt the need to wear high-vis when travelling.
I will admit to wearing clean khaki occasionally back in the Ansett days.

Status, rarely ensures class.

Tools come in all sorts of dress attire.

given the proliferation of these FIFO persons it is unlikely the Loung Dragons ant to antagonise the very fliers that are helping with airline profitability ?!

Qantas lounges probably need different physical market segmentation, rather than class of travel & level of status.

Thus, in a sense, a true (Qantas) Pub, with completely separate areas -

  • A sports bar, with sound isolating walls and one tough looking, cricket bat wielding, bar maid
  • A coughtail bar, with a more sophisticated refined atmosphere
  • An (indoor) beer garden, where the kids can have a bit of a play and families relax.
  • A poker machine nook, for all the techno-gadget folk
  • A self-serve bistro, to grab a light feed
  • Beds for a bit of a lie down and rest
  • Rooms for the local CWA meetings
  • VIP saloon for all the local councillors & big city business (wo)men

Perhaps a business lounge, a club/ff lounge and a chairman’s lounge, hasn’t really dealt perfectly with the needs of their various segments?

The workwear I have no problem with, I would like QF to set the bar somewhere though and for me Boardies and thongs are not appropriate in the QP.

Thanks for the gross misrepresentation of what was posited.

I don't fly out of mining towns - I have no issue with hi viz but I wonder if people are flying straight from the site and thus unshowered etc.? Genuine question given a lack knowledge in this area - thing is if you have time to shower then don't you have time to change?

What makes a bit of real estate an airport lounge? Whatever that is, you expect the airline to do what it takes to ensure passengers get that experience. Otherwise its not a lounge. Its just another part of the terminal. If the airline caves into people who appose this concept because they are regular ff then it ceases to become a lounge.

I have often flown PER-PHE and back in a day in a rather fetching orange hi vis shirt, with navy sleeves. Typically I'll fly back into PER shower and catch the red eye to MEL. (Admittedly these days I'm in the DJ lounge rather than the QP though.)

I have a fair bit of respect for the FIFO guys, as the very the businesses employing them are keeping me in a job.
