I'm currently sitting in the oneworld lounge at LAX listening to 2 people talking to their friends back home:shock:

One has an IPad and is talking into it and listening to his caller (actually we all are!!!) without a mike or earplug, and the other has a headset on and is talking to someone via a boom mike on the headset. we can only hear one side of that conversation.

What gives with manners? and privacy?

Probably be even more fun if they were talking to each other!!!!!!!

By the way, w-ifi here seems faster than normal - not sure why, i'd like to think it has been upgraded

Time to go back to the bar...........................

Wow ! They've definitely fixed the wi-fi for today, hopefully it remains so. I am prepared to put up with loud talking in the lounge if I can actually use my iPad :)

There's nothing wrong with have a conversation with others in the lounge, but the one sans-mic and headphones taking the mickey (specially if it is loud enough for others to hear). It's not hard to move to a quiet area of the lounge if you have to do that.

Manners in the QP have been discussed to death around these parts, and while it's not the job of the Lounge Dragons to teach some people manners I think they need to start tapping people on the shoulder and remind them to play nice with others.

I would have no issue with someone having a skype convo in the lounge - no different to a phone call - if they are particularly loud then again it is no different to a phone call or the guffawing I so often hear in the lounge :(

No mic or headset is rude and I have experienced it twice - once in the MEL J lounge when someone was skyping without headset or with video as well... Second was someone in the lift well at the Hilton on the Park in MEL was on skype to his girlfriend with no mic or headset...

I have no issues at all with headphones and mic, as long as the volume is ok.
I think the issue with headphones is that you don't hear yourself as you normally are, and I suspect you tend to talk louder.

no headphones and no mike is a no no as far as I am concerned.

Am I the only person on this planet who will never be backward in telling other PAX to tone it down if they are talking too loudly?

Was in Admirals Club in MIA recently and whilst trying to sleep this loud mouthed Yank went on and on for 5 minutes or so til I got up square in front of him and held my fore finger to my lips and did the 'shoosh' thing - he apologised and shut up immediately - don't wait for others to do the ruck work.

I’ve experienced Americans almost shouting into their computers, with full volume coming from the speakers to match, in Skype calls in a lounge before. When everyone turns around and looks, you’re doing it wrong!

However I have also FaceTime’d my mum from the F lounge in SYD. Admittedly there weren’t many in the lounge and I was quiet, so I don’t see it as a problem so long as you don’t include the rest of the lounge in the conversation, one-sided or not.

Recently had a guy next to me in the LAX oneworld F Lounge on Skype, no headphones, volume excessive, to his wife. 10 minutes of "i can hear you, but can you hear me?" and "it's very patchy, speak slower". He got the main details of the conversation across (flight arrival times), then asked what was new. To which the wife replied "I took the Jaguar in for a service and they claim we need four new tyres" - another 7 minutes about the pitfalls of Jaguar ownership. Soon after he sensed there was an unusual amount of glaring and the conversation finished.

Surprised he was able to get and maintain a connection at all!

Skyping instead of SMS us hardly surprising since the guy was too stupid to be able to assess tire wear himself.

OK then, for those with iPad's

wifi or wifi + 3G, which and why?

Other than using facetimed (or whatever it is called), can you use skype on your iPad and can you make normal phone calls using the 3G facility?

Skype on any 3G device requires WIFI to run, something to do with copyright (perhaps not the right word) but you get the point. But essentially Skype cannot replace your normal 3G service.

I am not sure if WI-FI tethering can bypass this though? E.g, phone is used a a wifi hopspot, and then use your iPad to run skype. Can anyone elaborate?

I like it.But mrsdrron would impress you.Last visit to the SGS in BKK we were in the Living room listening to jazz.A very loud American trying to impress his 2 young, female, local "friends".I could see mrsdrron getting more and more fed up.She gave him "the look" on a couple of occasions but didn't take the hint.So between numbers she got up,stood over him and said"Everyone else is here for the music.I dont care how much you want to impress your young friends.Just shut the cough* up."It was obvious she meant it.
Not another word out of him.At the end the fellow next to us(turned out to be a Cuban musician of note:D)thanked her profusely. The pianist came down and told her "that was fantastic, thanks a lot."

I assume that would work, But 3G for one yaer, 12G is $120 thru Telstra and I find it pretty useful. Since I got a Macbook air don't use the ipad much, and I do tether the laptop to my phone

This is not correct - I regularly use Skype over my 3G iPad connection.

I would get the 3G + wifi as for $10 a month it just avoids the "stress" of finding a wit spot..
