I have KrisFlyer and Qantas points and want to fly business from YVR to SYD

Hi @markhet :)

Not sure if you're asking for advice, or just indicating your future travel plans? If the former, then I'd suggest providing more info about your specific questions, prospective travel dates, your status - if any - with either airline and your flexibility in terms of routing etc.

I have KrisFlyer and Qantas points and want to fly business from YVR to SYD
How many points in each?
What have you found when looking?
Travel when?
One way?
Business class awards Canada-US <--> AU have been hard to get for a long. Also look for BNE and MEL as an alternative to SYD

SQ Krisfler is Star Alliance, so AC UA, NZ and others, But little hope with AirNZ
QF ffp is oneworld so QF, AA, FJ, AS, HA and others

HNL is about 1/3 of the way so KrisFlyer points to HNL an then QF points an option

I'd be going FJ via NAN as very low taxes and prices in QF award tables (cheaper points). Used to be a A350 but more recently A330. We have found availability in J to be good over the last 18 months

Real taxes are exactly the same for every airline flying the same route - class of travel
For those airline ffp's that charge cash award surcharges that can trigger additional real taxes, as it changes from non revenue to revenue flight . Often small, less than $10 tax, but country dependent,

Yes i know a large part of the fee is airline surcharges, which are opaque/revenue raising, and higher in J for QF. But FJ pass on the same copayment for J or Y, and kids pay nothing at all beyond the points, with the added bonus they price in the QF award table and not the partner airline table. We got five seats in J NAN-YVR for white Christmas and the total copayment was AUD 322 (adults $160 each, kids $0)
