Sounds like fun and games for a few JQ pax. Not sure why they did not fly them to DRW!

MORE than 270 passengers from Sydney had a weekend stop in Alice Springs instead of Bali after a series of calamitous events left them grounded for almost 24 hours.
Jetstar flight JQ37 from Sydney to Denpasar was diverted to Alice Springs on Saturday afternoon because of a medical emergency.

After landing ground crew discovered a technical problem with the plane which forced them to stay overnight.

Passengers are now being flown back to Sydney on two planes because Alice Springs does not have immigration facilities for international travel.

Not really much the pax can do re the medical diversion. Bit of bad luck with the technical glitch though isn't it.

Did the pax have to stay on the aircraft overnight? If there are no customs clearance at ASP, doesn't that technically mean they cannot get off the aircraft because doing so would violate border procedures (no customs clearance when they had already been cleared to depart Australia)?

If so, unlucky passengers for sure.

If they were allowed off, then I wonder what kind of legal provision was in place that allowed them to do so (and stay in Alice Springs), and why that same legal provision couldn't allow them to continue to DPS (i.e. after another JQ aircraft had flown into ASP to pick them up).

Surely it would have been easier to fly customs from DRW down to ASP like they do when there is a JAL or Hapag Lloyd charter to ASP or AYQ.

Next time, be sure to schedule your flight during the dry season of Indonesia, which is May to September (if not mistaken). During those months less is expected to fall (even no rain at all). Would you like to visit Bali again?
