I have actually agreed to go on a cruise

Scenic and Evergreen Tours have been in the courts lately over their decision not to cancel cruises when flooding occurred and instead bus their passengers around.
We did an Amsterdam to Basel cruise a while back. It was OK but many of the fellow passengers were a tad slow when on the included walking tours so we often went off ourselves. The towns were interesting but not ones I think we would rush back to. The good thing was we got to see them I suppose, normally would not go there. On the other hand, cruising the Med brings up all sorts of wonderful places to go back to.
The passenger mix on the Yangtze River cruise was much more diverse than that on the Rhine who were mainly US and wanted something safe. A downside to Scenic and APT for us would be the hight percentage of Australians on the tour. I like to escape them as much as possible.

Totally with you on that point. We probably will do a French river cruise in 2018 but not on Scenic/APT.

For river cruising you should really look at Uniworld, they are a fantastic company and little known as they do not have the huge budgets that the likes of Scenic or APT. They were one of the only companies last year that were able to get out of a town by calling short the time spent in that village in order to move through the locks and not get stranded. The other companies all got stuck.

I'd love to go on a short cruise around Asia. My wife gets sea sick.

I mentioned the cruise idea to her and she said she'd still like to go. Not sure whether to pursue it further as I may actually be torturing her as she would need motion sickness medication daily.

Will let you know how MrP goes on an Asian cruise over Christmas. We were on a ferry from Koh Samui to Ko Tau in January. Most of the passengers were green. I dont get sea sick but rather enjoy rough seas.

JohnK. Your wife wouldn't get sea sick on a med cruise. My SIL became ill just watching her daughters video of her honeymoon trip on a sail boat in the GBR but she coped with a Med cruise very well.

JohnK - many years ago my +1 worked on ships and always got seasick .
Against his better judgement I convinced him to go on a cruise when our youngest was a toddler and yes, he was seasick!!
Long story short, around 15 years later I won the argument again and we did a Panama Canal cruise. I researched seasick medication, we stocked up in the US and he took one tablet each night before bed. It worked :):):) and we had a fantastic cruise.
11 cruises later he is still taking medication and we both love cruising (so do our adult children). So never give up on the idea as there is always a solution.

Just be aware that the kids facilities on most cruises don't kick in until they are three years old. It's a fantastic family holiday where there is something to offer for everyone.

John, in January my family and I did a Celebrity cruise SIN-SIN for about 14 days. Called into Bali, Komodo Island, coughet and two Malaysian ports. We were sheltered by land pretty much most of the cruise so very smooth. Worth considering.

What's the difference? Is this calmer waters?

My wife got sick on the HKG-MFM ferry twice.

My brother and mum were sea sick for 38/39 days on the Patris in 1972. Dad and I managed quite well. I got sea sick first night and fine for the rest of trip. Dad managed a perfect record.

Yes - in mid summer the waters are calm. Deep blue.

JohnK, the Straits of Malacca are generally flat as millpond and so your wife would be fine on cruises that leave from Singapore and sail there. There are a few lines that do 3 - 5 day itineraries in that area. When littlie is a bit older it might be something to look at.

Ah, but could you bear to be away from her for a whole week??????
I won't see her until next Thursday night. :(

She has to spend time with grandma in the village and I am staying there unless we build a small house with at least a toilet and shower. Squat toilet and bucket doesn't quite do it for me. ;)
