Cathay swoops on Virgin sales process | afr.com

Rumours of Cathay Pacific being interested in a bid for Air New Zealand's stake in Virgin Australia.

I'm calling this a hypothetical, since I can't imagine SQ lettings CX in.

But, let's say it did happen and we had CX, EY and SQ as shareholders – could you see codesharing, reciprocal FF earning and burning, status benefits etc. being shared between the carriers? I'd imagine it would be much like Airberlin, who is also a member of OneWorld. But what would change for QF-CX? Perhaps nothing, considering the state of their own relationship.

Cathay being a QF and VA partner would certainly be an interesting situation. Can't see it happening though.

Maybe CX have thoughts about QFs commitment to OW

Shouldn't it be other ways around? CX in one world has bad relationship with QF, BA and AA...

It's not a surprise for them to look to someone else to gain more market in Australia. Consider Singapore air has such a success in AU market. Also CX really wants more slot out of Australia as well. But I don't see that happening either.

And personally as a VA supporter I don't want CX to buy BA's share. Because I don't want VA points won't be able to transfer to SQ :p

Looks more like a strategic play to force SQ to pay a premium to lock CX out. Having CX as a major shareholder could be a nightmare for other airlines.

AA and BA codeshare with CX at least, so their relationship must be a little better than QF with CX (who are frenemies at best and with no codeshares).

If CX were to buy into VA (and then codeshare), VA would have extensive codeshares with OW, *A, Sky team and one of the ME3.

I really cannot see this happening with SQ on the register and the rumoured one billion dollar capital injection coming up.

Yes, from memory the cooperation with AA is quite extensive. AA puts their code on CX's transpac services, CX puts theirs on AA's HKG-US services, CX puts their code on a load of AA domestic services, and AA put theirs on a number of CX's regional services (eg to SIN).

Can't see it happening but would be interesting. Best thing for VA is to be offloaded to SQ though I think

Many bonus points earn on AA don't earn on CX. Their status match specifically excludes CX.

CX are keeping SQ honest (making them pay a "full" price).

EY could be interested in more so potential third player.
