Can anyone explain how Mastercard LoungeKey works please?

I have this attached to my HSBC Premier Mastercard and cannot work out if it is similar to the Amex Plat Charge Priority Pass membership or a user pays everytime gig.

It is in essence an electronic version of Priority Pass (run by the same people, pretty much the same lounges)

It used to offer 2 complimentary visits a year,
