How to upgrade to First

That's pretty much what I have said, except I believe the fleet upgrade is completed now and there are no "old F seats"

QF52 last week had the F cabin, sold as J. The Lounge Manager in SIN had no idea that they still existed. As a community service to QF, I gave him feedback on the refurbishment. Thanks to all you fellow AFF'ers, I had the relevant info. Alan Joyce didn't even thank me for providing the pro bono training for his staff! Only (slight) downside was that it was a points upgrade. As soon as it was confirmed , I went online and selected 3A; again, thanks to advice from you friendly folk.

A "heritage" FA was overjoyed to be working in"F" again. J food and bevvies, but F quality service from him. He was fantastic. And I slept sooo well.

I was definitely wrong. There are 3 x 747's with old F still. The QF7/8 are all ER's though, which have no F.

VHOEB, OJL and OJM still have F: http://www.qantas.com.au/infodetail/flying/inTheAir/ourAircraft/744-14P52J32PY255Y.pdf

VH-OEB flew into Avalon yesterday for maintenance. May be the end of the 14F/52J/32W/255Y configuration?

There are no more cabin reconfigs, OEB will remain with F as will the others to service the routes where f is sold but not operated by A380, specifically SYD HKG Mid week, OEB is also the aircraft that operates the Captains Choice tours.

Don't be, it wasn't really that great.*

*(yes it was!)

HAHA classic

so what seat map should I look at on seatguru?

It has:
Boeing 747-400GE (744)
Boeing 747-400RR (744)
Boeing 747-438 (744) Four Class V1
Boeing 747-438 (744) Four Class V2
Boeing 747-438 (744) Two Class

It's definitely not 4 class, and I am booked in Y+ so it definitely isn't 2 class, so it would have to be one of the first two? I am not sure what the difference is between "GE" and "RR"

The Qantas Website for the 747-400ER has which is what I would think would be used to service such a long route says that it is "58 Business; 36 Premium Economy; 270 Economy". So I am not sure if this corresponds to the "GE" or "RR".

At any rate it looks like the pointy end at the front will be the quietest cabin with the most room so if I am lucky enough to find a spare seat there in the last 5 hours before my flight after I find out about my upgrade (if I get it) I will try and lock it in. Has anyone been in this cabin and if so was it pretty good?

Cheers,

As I posted above, http://www.qantas.com.au/infodetail/...2J32PY255Y.pdf is the seat map for the old F on the 747's.

The 747 ER's are the ones that do (amongst other routes) SYD-DFW and DFW-BNE-SYD (QF7/8). There is no old F on these birds at all.

Thanks for that. I was a bit confused when I saw you post it before, sorry. If I am lucky enough to get a seat at the pointy end that would be great. Will just have to wait and see!

Cheers,
You'll only be in a Skybed if you are in the pointy end, but still, it's streets ahead of Premium Economy (which I can cope with, but the only time I did QF7 was in Economy; after the 14th hour I wanted to kill myself!).

So I just got an SMS saying my upgrade has been approved. I logged on as quickly as I could to see what seats were left, and there were none and I had been Allocated 8D which is just in front of the stairs and the lavatories. So it's certainly not as good as it could be, but at least I am not in the back!!!

This might be more appropriate in another thread but it is still relevant to my trip to the US.

My flight from DFW-BWI which is QF4561 is on AA metal. Is there a way I can pay cash at the counter in the US to be upgraded to J. Firstly, is this possible, and secondly, will this get me more SC's?

Currently the whole return trip gets me 320 SC and I am 430 SC from attaining SG, so every little bit helps at the moment. After upgrading my flight to and from the US I will have about 120k QFF points to try and get some ASA's to get over the line but I suspect if I want to get it I will need to dip into my own pocket.

Thanks again for everyones help!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but on a QF ticket, AA can't offer a paid upgrade that would change the 'ticketed' class of travel. So while you might get the seat, SCs would be doubtful.

They could on an AA flight number and ticket however.
