how much does one get paid to write articles such as this? Is pay given simply for having the audacity to pitch the idea of an article saying "buy a comfy seat if you can afford it, don't be annoying, bring something to amuse yourself for a few hours"?

Really the whole article could be compressed down to - "bring something to entertain yourself, get the best seat and airline you can afford / justify, and don't be a #### to the other pax both in the air or on the ground".

The rest was simply filler.
