How to make enemies...! [by weighing carry-on]

Wear a coat with a lot of pockets. After checkin and bags weighed stuff can go back in bag.Or you can get trousers with several pockets eg safari type.Personally I have a jacket with huge pockets I call my Rex coat as they only allow 5KGKg carryon.

I,m with you, Rex coat in winter and Rex cargo pants in summer. To be fair though, Rex's Saab 340 aircraft probably do justify a more restrictive carry on allowance than larger aircraft.

Sometimes I really do believe employees at airlines do their best to damage the passenger experience.

The ONLY reason an airline would ever weigh carry-on prior to departure is for overall net weight calculations. Perhaps there's a business opportunity in creating an app which notifies pax if theres a lot of cargo on their flight?

Ultimately the argument for 7kg is total garbage because:
- Other airlines which operate the same aircraft have higher allowances
- It's an airline policy / ie: not regulated or government enforced
- Hard cased carry-ons are 5-6kg before you put anything inside
- What if you don't check in any bags? You're then 23-64kg under your total weight entitlement
- Why isn't total body weight factored in?

It's nothing but a scam. Seriously I could never enforce this rule with pax and sleep properly at night. No idea how the airline staff could either.

You, sir, are 100% correct.

Rex is 7kg. They were weighing everything yesterday. I thought I might have to carry my duty free internally. The comment was made that there have been audits recently. It’s amazing how much a MacBook Pro and two iPads weigh.

Sounds like you need a new carry-on ;)

If it's not going in the hold, probably don't need a hard case?

trippin_the_rift - Hard cased carry-ons are 5-6kg before you put anything inside

I was just thinking this myself. My checked in luggage hard case is a whopping 3.5 kg. What on earth is weighing 5-6kg that's carry-on? I'd seriously revisit my carry-on luggage strategy if my case weighs that alone. I really hate lugging stupid amounts of weight onto a plane.

Rex were 5Kg at least until 2015 from Burnie. And it was weighed every time.Only traveled twice on Rex since and both times only carried a kindle so weight didn't come into it.

I have 5 or 6kg of Lion batteries alone that legally cant be carried anything but carry on.
Add a rebreather, camera, jacket, laptop, tablet and a few bits and pieces for the trip like meds...

Looks like she was trying to check in the duffel bag but was told it was oversized, and directed to the oversize bag drop area. Didn't mention she wanted it as "carry on."
Certainly looks too big as carry on but doesn't appear "oversized"

How does racism become part of the argument?

I had my first experience of having my bag weighed today.
The excuse / reason was my case looked big, I pointed out it was regulation size.
Never the less I was 1 kg over, so as I am entitled to two pieces, I was advised to remove the iPad from the case and carry it on board.
I have a couple of points to make here.
1. What is the difference between carry an iPad in my hand vs having it in my carry on?
2. If the rules are going to be enforced (albeit some many years after they were promulgated) why not enforce ALL of the rules? Like not using the J cabin toilets if you’re in Y (emergencies notwithstanding) or only boarding if your row is actually called? Or being sent to the back of the line if you’re in the priority queue when you shouldn’t be. Need I go on?

Frankly I am happy to comply with the rules, but I would like to see a level playing field.
PS.
It’s just as well I wasn’t weighed last Sunday , I had probably more weight than I should have had from buying some wine while in Melbourne at the Rutherglen “pop up” cellar door wine tastings. And that’s even after having a couple of cases delivered.
I may have to completely re think my whole checked vs carry on arrangements.

Having just completed island hopping around the Torres Strait for work on a 6 seater charter...

A couple of my less fit colleagues pushed the available luggage per person down to 4kg each... basically a laptop, toothbrush and change of underwear for a couple of days packed into a shopping bag.

I have no idea why it was perceived by the passenger as racist!
Apparently the tone of voice. ‍♀️ Go figure. Your tone of voice can be racist. I am taking dictation lessons but apparently that’s not enough as my tone can be perceived as racist.

Oh By the way my bag got weighed and had to surrender it. Then they lost it because I still had another connecting flight from Brisbane onwards. So it got left in Brisbane ( my carryon) my documents passport etc etc.
i was able to claim lost luggage insurance but that’s when they knocked back Chubb now wants you to purchase at least 250 dollars to activate the flight insurance ( AMEX centurion a card which costs 5K annually) .... Chubb have been declining more and more Lately. Especially work trips.

.

That's definitely a bummer. I would imagine a last minute switch from "carry on" to checked in luggage wouldn't bode well for your luggage arriving in it's correct destination especially with a connecting flight; your bags having not gone through the usual "check in" process.

Were you given an opportunity to rearrange your carry on, potentially remove your laptop and carry that separately?

And were you much over the 7kg limit?

Did you hear about the rebreather that arrived in Mexico with a drill hole through the head?
