How to link new ascent to old gateway account?

Hoping someone can explain how to link a new ascent to old gateway account . a friend of mine just got the ascent and seems to have 2 accounts now. we went the other way and got the ascent first and the gateway was automatic.
though it good to start this thread so others can comment on their success or failure.

This is being discussed on the Amex Explorer thread - not sure why that thread isn't in this forum.

As I mentioned over there, I got the Explorer (with Gateway) in March and Platinum Edge (Ascent) in April and just phoned up to say keeping track of two points balances was too hard and could they link them please.

It took a follow-up phonecall to get the points transferred, but it's all sorted now.
