ok, so how Velocity works confuses me. Heres the deal. Im flying Premium economy MEL-LAX then economy LAX to DTW (thru Delta) then Delta again DTW to LAX and back to premium economy on VA for LAX to MEL.

how does the velocity point system work? I was reading something about status credits, and you get 5 points per dollar spent, or something like that. Im just really confused. Does anyone know how the earning system for virgin works?

5 points per $ spent is for domestic flights. International flights are mileage based (note based on miles not km) and points depend on distance flown and class of travel. see table Points Earn with Airline Partners | Velocity Frequent Flyer . Flying with partner airlines will earn different rates of points per mile flown also.

Status Credits are different to points and qualify you for different membership levels of Velocity Frequent Flyer. Earning Status Credits | Velocity Frequent Flyer. The higher the VFF membership entitles you to bonus ff points on top of the points earn that all VFFs receive.

Ok so im in fare class O for Virgin and K for Delta. So it looks like ill be getting 1.25 points for my VA flights and 1 point per mile on the Delta ones.

and then status credits are like random extra points that just upgrade you in the system? Thats the gist I'm getting?

Points reward you based on how far you fly internationally or how much you spend domestically and provide a mechanism to redeem them for flights or toasters.
Status credits reward your loyalty to the airline, allowing you to climb the elite frequent flyer ladder with associated benefits.

While points are great, many go after status credits as the benefits are greater than a free flight or toaster to those who fly often.

Your points and SC one way will be (assuming Red VFF membership level):
MEL-LAX - 9930 points and 120 SC
LAX-DTW - 1979 points and 20 SC

You will earn enough status credits on your trip to get you to silver.

Oh sweet! Ok but question. On my flight down to Australia on VA I only got 80 status credits for the LAX to MEL trip. how am i going to get 120 this time? Am i getting more because I'm flying premium economy ?

oh another question! So since I'm going to achieve silver status. Will I then have that stays for one year after its granted? So my flight is on June 26th. Will the silver status begin June 26th and end June 26th of 2015? Or will I only have silver status a year from the first flight i took with virgin? (which was Sept 2013... meaning id only have until Sept 2014?) Or is based on Calendar year?

The year starts from the flight that gets you the status level. In your case, it will be June 26th.

AWESOME! thanks so much guys! that virgin website is like a maze that i can't navigate haha!

So points domestically are calulated on fare paid right? scs are distance (zone) based,,, so if im doing a run BNE to CNS J saver, i should get 120 scs? always confused with virgin...

60 SC's each way.

the first flight i took with virgin......which was Sept 2013...
Another thing for you to consider is that SCs expire after 12 months which means the 80 you had from your 9/13 flight will add to your SCs you'll receive from your next trip so between June 26 (or whatever date as it does usually take a few days to post after the flight has been taken) and the anniversary date of your previous flight in September, you will have 360 SCs. You haven't mentioned any other planned trips but keep in mind you are reasonably close to Gold status (500SCs to attain, 400Scs to retain) and you may be able to do some constructive planning with adding sectors (remembering that SCs are awarded per sector). For example, if you decided to replace your MEL-LAX with MEL-BNE-LAX with the MEL-BNE sector in J, you would gain an additional 120 SCs for the return trip placing you easily within a short reach to the 500 needed for Gold. Gold gives quite a lot of benefits over silver, but benefits of status are only useful if you fly. If you have no further trips planned for a year or so, it's really pointless to waste the extra money to get to gold in the first place.

Alternatively, are you travelling with a partner? VA also have family pooling where you may be able to either direct your partners SCs to your account or vice versa and earn Gold that way. Gold also gives a travel companion the same status benefits as the Gold member.

I do have some other trips planned. I'm going to be going from MEL to NZ possibly in September. And if I can afford it I would love to fly down to Hobart sometime maybe in August to see the Southern Lights if I'm lucky

havin said that, I'm 24. so I'm not made of money and ill defiantly never have enough money to fly J (cuz thats business class right?)

Yes, sorry I should have said that!

You need to do some more reading of this forum! Lots of people on here fly J a lot and don't pay any more than regular economy. Knowledge is the key!
