I have had inconsistent enforcement of the rules as well, it certainly varies by airport, now I just pull the Ipad out anyway.

I almost missed my connection in Heathrow because I left it in my bag, and my entire bag went to the back of a very long line of re-screens and further scrutiny such as physical inspection and explosives residue testing... It kept me at security for about 40 minutes, and they knew it was an iPad that triggered it, because that was the first question they asked me when they got to my bag.

I have traveled domestically for the past 8 months with the Ipad in my bag. Never been asked to take it out in MEL, Brisbane and SYD (Travelling Virgin Blue).... But I am thinking twice weather to take it out this week when I travel MEL to Abu Dhabi or return via SYD. Also travelling through LAX next month and would hate to have the same delay and miss the connecting Delta flight.... Would be really great if the airport security (Even just domestic) could be consistent with their restrictions and have their metal detectors set to the same sensitivity... Shoes go off in MEL but ok in SYD... But nearly needed to strip off in Launceston.... Seriously.... Just be consistent...

Left it in my bag going through security in SYD T3 this morning, with no issues.

Never been asked to remove ipad either in Oz or in USA. So far so good.

Security
Having my iPad in the front pocket of my wheelie I find convenient to remove if required, though wasn't required and the screening employee turned the bag onto the front where iPad was inside wheelie....:evil::evil:

Luckily it wasn't broken or screen damaged. Shame there isn't a single governing body or corporate entity and enforces same rules across the board and follows through. Maybe if a Govt body did it it would work?

Seatpocket
From my experience:
iPad/ Kindle / eReader = okay for seatpocket
Laptop (regardless of size) = into bag

Reason = weight in the seat pocket, can fall through or can turn into 'projectile' in turbulence or abrupt landing/impact.

Int & Domestic - iPad not taken out at the airport for screening.

Was at Buck House though...

It seems the process varies by airport. It will be interesting next week as a friend just bought an iPad 2 for me at the Chermside Apple Store in BNE (the lines at the George Street store were bigger than for the iPhone 4 launch!) and I’m getting a colleague to bring it down with him on Tuesday. I’m hoping they will let him carry it on in a bag, still boxed up, without needing to remove it for separate screening. The un-boxing is a big part of the fun.

I have found the process varies so much that I now always take my IPad out of my bag.

I really don't like my bag being sent back for rescreening along with the IPad and disappearing from my sight. :-|

Just passed through MEL international and left the iPad on the bag... No issues, no re screen... Off to AUH for a few days ...

Latest Update:

FRA - no problem leaving in bag.

2 days later, exact same screening point and x-ray - "You must remove this!"

LHR - no problem leaving in bag

4 days later, exact same screening point and x-ray - "You must remove this!"

LAGS, laptops, ipad.... when asked if I have any of these I say "I'm fine".

Goes through Xray and I'm never questioned. Don't give up any information. End of story

I didn't say anything, and it went through, they were then asking me to remove and re-scan. Oh well:)

Lucky you. I left a mac mini in my backpack on the reasoning that it isn't a laptop. I got an abusive security person - "you gotta take the laptop out". No laptop, I replied. "Playstation, xbox, whatever take it out" they snapped at me.
