My Ipad recently gave in, so wanted to know if using a chromecast(assuming free wifi and HDMI) would make sense? or would it be better to just buy a new tablet and carry my media?

Cheers!

I always carry an HDMI cable to run media from my laptop. Of course, cabling is not always an option as sometimes the rear ports of the tv are inaccessible. I've come across the 'screen mirroring' option in a few places now. Haven't tested it yet (due to preferring to cable) but it looks promising. Failing that, I watch on my laptop but the screen is nowhere near as good. Also, on longer trips I always take my Logitech speaker (an X300 model) along. Fairly compact. Bose Soundlink Mini would be similar if your budget stretches to that.

I use an Ipad with AVPlayerHD loaded up with everything I want to watch. No need to worry about wifi or stuffing around with getting access to the HDMI port. If I have wifi, then I can watch Netflix on it as well.

It is an expensive option if you otherwise wouldn't buy a tablet though, so if that's the case, then yeah, I reckon give a chromecast a go - it's cheap enough that if you don't use it, you haven't lost much and can probably use it at home anyway.

You will need to set it up to connect the a new wireless network every time though, which might be a pain/not possible depending on the setup of the hotel network. I also reckon I'd leave about 1 per week behind in the room.

I've always just used my laptop to watch media (usually stored on the laptop) but often used the Hotel WiFi to stream live eSports (Twitch.TV or YouTube) or occasionally AFL where internet permits.

Carrying the media would be much less of a hassle depending WiFi quality where you're headed. Wonder if those new HDMI-Stick PCs would be any good for this purpose?

Can't say I've used them. Although I think most hotels have accessible HDMI ports?

Thanks for the replies. But my laptop has Endpoint encryption, can encrypts any USB drive i connect to it
