I have been noticing that a lot of you FF know what seats you have booked or what class tickets are still available..
Can you share your secret with us newbies ???

domestically, Qantas setas can be selected up to 24 hours before the flight through their on line engine.

internationally, the rules vary from carrier to carrier. if you fly J or F, you can pick your seat. If you have status, you can also usually pick your seat. On most carriers, if you fly whY and have no status, then they usually allow seat selection up to a % of the cabin, and then it can only be done at check-in.

Ticket classes can be checked through www.seatcounter.com (free) or for greater detail, www.expertflyer.com (subscription).

There are quite a few threads to answer your queries.

Most airlines offer some form of seat pre-allocation on booking. Qantas allow it for their international flights but not for domestic flights on Oz/NZ.

Qantas.coms' Bookings - Manage Your Booking - Flight Booking sometimes shows you seat allocation for international flight bookings but not always.

As Qantas use Amadeus, their www.checkmytrip.com facility can be used instead to show any seat preallocation, and possible, seatmaps.

As for fare buckets availability, there is SeatCounter - The Booking Class Availability Machine which is a free service. Paid services such as ExpertFlyer.com - Empowering the Frequent Flyer and KVS provide more information.

Also, once you've flown in an aircraft with a particular configuration about 100 times, you get to know which seats you favor, and which you'd rather avoid.

you can say that again.

and, after flying a particular route for a long time, you also know which cabin crew are great and which are best avoided, but then again, there's nothing you can actually do about that issue....

Some airlines like Air Asia let you book your seats online when booking your flight.
