What is the best method of cleaning wine glasses ? Do you use the dishwasher or just warm water ?

I have trouble with red wine stains on my aerator and to date have only rinsed under the tap. I don't want to use detergent or other smelly cleaners.

How do you keep your wine accessories clean ?

Paging Penegal, but maybe he is another who doesn't keep his glass empty.

Usually I wash with warm water under the tap, with a touch of detergent on the cloth, then rinse 2 or 3 times.

Glasses go in the dishwaser. Bought beads for the decanter as it was getting more and more stained...only ever rinse it with hot water though, no soap.

My technique:

1.- Glasses hand washed - hot water, detergent, care to make sure every bit of surface area is cleaned, rinse with warm water, drain until almost dry, then final dry (must still be slightly damp) with an exceeding clean, lint-free, old tea towel.

2.- Glasses in dishwasher - make sure they are stacked to water sprays hit inside, and use a quality rinse agent, but again polish with that old, lint free, clean tea towel.

3.- Decanters - I hate them and refuse to use them. I have used an aerator because my wife gave me one, which I clean by simply rinsing with very hot water, but deep down I believe wine should go from bottle to glass directly - retains the authenticity of the individual bottle :)

I usually wash wine glasses in the sink, with warm water, a drop of detergent and a special pig bristle dish washing brush (doesnt scratch). If I have crystal vases or glassware that is hard to wash, I just put luke warm water in it and a tablespoon of uncooked rice, leave it for 5 minutes then swirl round, rinse and they are done.

Decanter beads. Small metal beads (like ball bearings). Swirl them round in the decanter with some water and they remove the red staining.

Major, I responded, and I am not a woman. And if I was I probably wouldn't be a "lady" :)

But I do like a very clean wine glass.....

Yes you did, and thank you.

I was thanking the lasses for the info on beads

I accept your apology. But just remember - a perfectly clean, old and lint-free tea towel. And care. And you cannot go wrong :)

The beads are specifically for decanters, which you said you don't use. I generally find it hard to get any sort of towel into most decanters and get any sort of decent clean :)

LOL :) best forget decanters and beads. Concentrate on the glass.....

So does a Steradent tablet overnight.

This! Easiest way to remove red wine stain build up. Beads work too, but so much more effort. I just rinse my decanters with water. Every now and then, Steradent in overnight and voilla.

Glassware sadly by hand as it doesn't fit in the dishwasher. Otherwise dishwasher is the way to go.
