Book on US site using your AU credit card.

Select US for country, and in city/zip code use Serfty's favorite "El Segundo".

Should work fine.

This has worked with no hassles for me too.
But it took ages for the payment to go through (over a week IIRC)

+2.

Regular AU CC plus a US address works fine on the AA US site.

We had an AA flight glitch on us where it never validated using my Australian AMEX.
We fixed it at the check in so we did get on that flight. It is unsettling to be told no go with no tickets.

Did you receive the eticket confirmation on the email?

My experience is that their system will only issue the eticket confirmation if payment is successful.

We had the booking but not the ticket so I handed over my Amex at the counter and off we went.Since then I either use an American debit card or I use expedia.

I looked up the Australian Expedia site and US Air is $68.40AUD for the round trip on those dates so your deal at $29US each way is better on American.

Im flying on AA connector - want Mrs munitalP on same AC as me.

Will try advice above

Or Marina del Rey is 90292 but then Flemings is in El Segundo for that steak!

I used Expedia in the end - it was expensive but hassle free.

Thanks for the advice though

Ok it can be El Segundo for food instead......Whole Foods,Houstons for lunch and Flemings if it is dinner.
On the card side of things I have been working hard to get a credit score in the US so we have a couple of credit cards in their local currency to cope with BS like you just experienced. I am making some progress but after almost a year and a half you have to think the system works against Australians.
When faced with those choices I would do Australian Expedia and get the flight and room or if it was a longer flight I would use QF points and fly up front.
One thing you may not know and for years I did not know......American Lite Beer is regular strength (full strength beer) and is just light on carbs!
