How did our Qantas upgrade happen?

Man you have the voodoo working for you. Lately I can't even "buy" an upgrade, even when there's been empty seats........but that's a thread thats been done many, many times!:evil:.

Poor redroo. Don't worry. I haven't ever had an opup either :shock:

Having never flown International Business before (only domestic) I loved it and was the best flight I have ever had. The flat bed was amazing and the service the best. The sad part was, after our 4 day stop in Tokyo the rest of the leg was Economy on Austrian... I don’t know how I ever used to think Economy was great!

Before I had gone Business I always thought it would be a waste of money, but can clearly see now that it’s worth it.

The whole time waiting to board and even while on the flight I was waiting for someone to come up to us and say “Excuse me, we’ve made a mistake, you’re supposed to be in the back”.

I’ve asked people who have worked for Qantas before and they said the same as you guys, just said it was a mystery and depends on different factors.

Just wondering though, is it worth it when you check in just to ask if there is a chance of an upgrade?

I’ve heard of people doing it, but is it normal, or considered rude? Or will the check in staff think you’re an idiot economy passenger for asking such a question?

I agree completely with your statement about Qantas Business Class. It happened to me on my flight yesterday from LAX to MEL. Got upgraded to business class and it was fantastic! Made it much more sweeter being on the A380! :)
 
You could always try the following.....

Scenario one
Eg You might be a BNE based self employed check and training captain doing a bit of work for a Darwin General Aviation company. Dress up in your full regalia ie navy pants, white shirt plus epaulettes - 4 bars naturally. It goes without saying to leave your ASIC card on your person fully visible for all to see.

Wait until cabin crew are securing the cabin for departure then tell, I mean lie to an F/A telling her you are a Qantas Link Check and Training Captain and crewing stuffed up you should've been booked in business class and see what happens. Crew might err on the side of caution - "what if he is who he says he is" and before you know it you're up the front.

Scenario two
Sit down in business class anyway then when challenged by crew as to your correct seat in economy tell them that Qantas Club stuffed up your upgrade to J and rely on their good nature to leave you there. Why would they question you, after all you're a pilot - no mistaking that because of course you're in uniform.

Scenario three
Upgrade legitimately in the Club on points as you're travelling on a commercial fare paid for by the client. Then after the flight complain that you didn't authorise QF Club to deduct the points and demand your points be refunded.

I can't believe someone hasn't nailed his rrrs to the wall by now - wouldn't think QF Link would be too happy about his claim that he works for them.

A friend of mine who happens to be a pilot had heard of this guys form and was on the same DRW/BNE flight the other day and saw him in action - as he succinctly put it "was the most tragic thing he'd seen in quite a while". :D :D

Tell me what? That for some of us "luck" is inherited at birth and hardly changes through the course of a lifetime. Perhaps my "luck" will change as all my long haul flights have moved to SQ....

I'm in the same boat as alot of other people. No upgrades, ever, and l've been kind enough to move seats for some else last minute when requested by the CSM.

This happened to me to recently on a Qantas SFO-MEL flight.
I was upgraded to Premium, however after a walk around the plane decided to bump myself back to Economy and stretch out across a middle row. There must have been about 60 pax in Economy, everyone with a row each.

My tips:
Smile and be very nice at check in,
Always have your APEC card visible,
Offer small chocolates to check in clerk (Worked wonders for me on a recent Alaska Air flight),
Be early,
Help little old ladies (once got an upgrade on emirates AKL-MEL because I help a granny with her luggage cart in the check in queue).
