House Extends FAA Authority Through July 3

House lawmakers on March 17 approved a three-month extension of FAA’s operating authority. This will cover the agency from March 31 — when the current extension expires — through July 3. This will allow time for the Senate and House to reconcile their long-term FAA reauthorization bills. The Senate is still debating its version of the reauthorization bill, and began voting March 16 and 17 on a long list of proposed amendments.

Congress has extended FAA’s operating authority by one month to the end of April, even though the House was until very recently pushing for a three-month extension.


The shorter extension now gives less time for House and Senate lawmakers to reach a compromise on a long-term FAA reauthorization bill. The current extension expires March 31, so the new proposal would cover the agency until the end of April.

Lawmakers Must Resolve Differences To Advance Bill

A legislative revamp of U.S. commercial aviation policy has taken a major step forward with the Senate’s approval of an FAA reauthorization bill. However, serious horse-trading with House lawmakers will be needed to iron out controversial clauses that alarm industry leaders and threaten to stall the bill yet again.

Aviation groups have waited for two and a half years for Congress to pass new FAA legislation. As well as renewing the FAA’s operating authority and establishing funding priorities, it will resolve long-standing policy questions that have been causing industry uncertainty both in the U.S. and overseas.
