Limewood 2 things you must do IMHO is:
1.- Purchase Taxi Book - Shanghai - wealth of info on all facets of lfe in Shanghai - hotels, restaurants, bars, sightseeing locations, shopping etc - costs $8 I think - invaluable - has ALL addresses in Chinese so you choose where you want to go and just show taxi driver.
2.- Download Shanghai Subway Map - free and invaluable. Subway so easy in China - and so cheap.

2 things you MUST do in Shanghai - go see the the old guys playing jazz at Peace Hotel and take a night cruise on Huangpu River - the light show of the Bund as you return is SPECTACULAR.

Have fun - Shanghai spectacular city. FWIW I always stay at Le Royal Meridien on Puxi side - great location - I would NEVER stay on Pudong side.

Try the Hilton, Sheraton or the Carlton Ritz for a treat and you have to do the financial centre lift and Maglev train if you are into speed, even if you are not it is a great buz
