Hiya

I am not sure if this helps, but researching where to stay in New York I came accross the "Pod Hotel" - might suit you as it has single rooms as well as doubles I think they were around US$80-90 for singles

As for food have a look at this

Big Apple budget bites

Hope that helps

It really does depend on your budget, the time of year that you are going and what you want to do.Really it doesnt matter much where you stay in Manhattan as it is easy to get around and the attractions are not all in one place any way.
My suggestion is to book something you are happy with but on a rate that can be cancelled without penalty. Then you can keep an eye out for any specials that can come up.You dont have to look just at the budget sites.I was always in hiltons when travelling to NYC and you certainly can find places like the Hilton NY,Doubletree suites Time square at well under $200.Other times the price will be astronomical.
Last year in August when looking at NYC there were a couple of days when you could get the Embassy suites at Battery park for ~$US125-and that includes a full brekkie and a managers reception in the evening. The prices can change nearly daily at times so you just have to keep looking.

+1 on this. I've stayed in Hilton Garden Inn, opposite Macy's for $109++ a night. In early July. Yet one October I stayed in a old hotel in a room with a single bed in it and that's all - no cupboard even, and shared bathroooms for $150++ a night! Most 3/4 star hotels at that time of the year were way over $300USD/night.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your input every little bit helps. :)
I guess I have to do some more research.

I'd suggest finding a hotel which is close to a convenient subway line such as the 4,5,6 or even the A,C,E lines.

MTA NYC Transit - Subway Service Information

Firstly, being on those lines means its so easy to travel up/down town needed on the island. Also these lines have convenient access to JFK airport.

Esp. a first time visit may sound daunting to get the subway into Manhattan, but it is easy pie, and depending on time of day can get you there in half the time versus a "4x the $$$" cab ride.

Try the Best Western Presidential. No breakfast was included when I was there.

I stayed in NY with a friend I was travelling with, and we rented an apertment which worked out to be very good value.

We used Vacation rentals, private rooms, sublets by the night - Accommodations on Airbnb where you book through the website to get either a whole apartment or a room and you pay through the website etc which seemed to work well.

Of course each place is different etc, but you might be surprised at what you can get for your $$

Enjoy your trip!

A friend of mine recently booked 8 nights at the Sheraton Manhattan for about US1200.00 plus tax. This is for travel in December possibly over Christmas.

She went direct to The Sheraton Manhattan website clicked on the button "call me know" and they call you in Australia and do a deal over the phone.

We were in New York last month (04-08 Nov) and stayed at The Cosmopolitan Hotel Tribeca located at 95 W Broadway (Cnr Chambers St) which is right on top of the Chambers St Subway Station and has a Starbucks next door. Next door there is also The Soda Shop which is like a diner, plus a 24 hour deli and Donut King one block away.

We booked it direct over the website www.cosmohotel.com

The rate for a mini-loft room with double bed and private facilities was USD195.00 + tax but they have a special of USD139.00 Jan to 31 Mar 2010.

To get from JFK to the hotel we prebooked the Supershuttle the day before on 1 800 258 3826. The cost of both of us was US36.00 for the fare, US6.48 tip, US1.44 state tax & US1.76 county tax - total US45.68 which was all prepaid and charged to a credit card.

Enjoy your stay in the Big Apple.

Cheers

As general advice DONT rent an apartment in NYC.Most are illegal and although often you get away with it it can go horribly wrong. This one was advertised as apartments-

The city is cracking down and there are posts on TA where apartment bookings are being cancelled-

And just in case you think they are isolated cases read this collection by a lovely NYC lady-yes I have met her-

So Greenfrog you were lucky. That was probably an illegal apartment.many have been featured in the New york times-it is no guarantee of legality.

Grand Hyatt (at grand central station) is in an awesome location, plus the bus heads straight there from JFK (drop off across the road).

We had a corporate rate without breakfast at US$220/nt (+taxes.) This was in september.

SQ1, it would probably help to know a rough budget and we can offer more useful advice :)

Do use Priceline and Hotwire Forum to assist helping you identify the Hotwire or Priceline hotel.

www.priceline.com or www.hotwire.com for the hotel bookings.

For Priceline it's pot-luck within an area, e.g. mid-town east. I'll be using Priceline (via betterbidding.com) for my NYC trip next June. I'll book with 3 weeks to go and expect to get a 4-star hotel, e.g., Grand Hyatt (MTE) opp. Grand Central for somewhere between $85 and $120 a night.

Prior to cottoning on to Priceline I was looking at staying in Queens for $120 a night for a new 3.5 star hotel, which wasn't bad.

Tripadvisor.com can help with reviews on hotels.

Hilton Garden Inn Times Square, quite good value for money IMHO only a couple of blocks off Broadway, and the Subway across the street.

Yeah it is quite good. We did a bit of a "status run" in July that included Hilton Garden Inn's at Times Square, Chelsea & 34th Street, as well as Doubletree Chelsea. (phew, but as it worked out it was relatively easy to change, and managed to get good rates at each one). I'd rate 34th Street (right near Macy's not far from Times Square either) as best - we had awesome view of Empire State - but Times Square not far behind.

Check out Quikbook Hotels: Discount Hotel Reservations - New York and Other Cities. They have some good deals for Manhattan hotels and most allow you to - in their words - 'book now pay later'. They also have a generous cancellation policy which allows you to cancel approx 24 hours before your arrival date with no penalty. This flexibility is great if you find a better deal closer to time.

It goes without saying that you should always check directly with the hotel's website to see if they are offering a better deal.

Also, make sure you read the hotel reviews on Reviews of vacations, hotels, resorts, vacation and travel packages - TripAdvisor before making a choice.

How did you get on SQ1 - get a reasonable deal?

SPRUCE

Have booked the wife and a friend into the Park Central which is opposite Carnegie Hall.

11 nights for $3500inc taxes for a Suite with a view down 7th avenue to times square. They were having 40% off suites for the time they were there so we jumped on it

This was directly from the hotels website and they had very good rates for all rooms at the time of booking :)
