Hotels in London, NY & DC

I'm off to the UK and the US in September/October, and I don't have a huge amount of experience with London, NY or Washington.

Never spent more than a day in London before and it's a first time visit to Washington DC. Stayed in the lovely Big Apple Hostel in NY last time (which i won't be doing again!) so I'm after some suggestions from those who know the areas a bit more than I do.

London - just need something central. 3 days from the 25-28 September. Hoping for no more than $180 - $200 a night.

Washington - again, central to the main sites (Obama's place, monument etc), but also with access to the public transport. 4 nights from 28 Sep, same kind of price.

New York - I like the Times Square area and had been hoping to get a good deal on the Hotel Pensylvania (which I've seen for as low as $79US), however seems to be about $200 with taxes for the dates I'm after (2/10 - 6/10). Any other suggestions.

Thus far prices seem high, or am I just looking too early on and should I wait for some specials?

For London in 2009 we stayed at London Bridge hotel, booked through hotelclub who seemed to have by far the best price for that hotel. We were able to walk to the Thames & along in both directions to sights. Plenty of pubs within stumbling distance & 2 minute walk to underground station.

I'd back the London Bridge as well - great hotel, good position.

I also go along with comment about Hotelclub. I'm currently at the Thistle Marble Arch booked through them at a great great. Good hotel, very central.

Try an Insight Tours 3 day London stay. We stayed at the Thistle Marble Arch and it was good value. We were upgraded to executive floor when we arrived at 0700am and they checked us in early.

For NYC can try www.priceline.com and the name your own price option. Alternativly Hilton Garden Inn Times Square is around the US$200 area, very friendly staff and opposite the Subway station (try for a room on a high no. floor just to ease the street noise a bit)

I've heard only good things about the Hilton Garden Inn Time Square and you can also use your NRMA AAA Code for a further discount when you book it on their website. Alternatively, check on Hotelclub, they have decent prices as well for other hotels in different areas.

I am going to NY in June and I'll be staying at the Hilton Times Square, it's peak season and we're paying $299/night, but we decided to spend a bit more for the better location...plus being with HH, I wanna get some points.

We have booked for July to Imperial Collage (Kensington) which is holiday accomadation in student residences. Not sure if available for your dates. Eastside is brand new. It seems very good value, especially for their holiday periods

We got a good size double room with breakfast for under 80 pounds but there are different options. Much better than a small pokey hotel room. Kensington is central and not far from Paddington station, Hyde Park.

Hotel club is also good for London.

Depending on your definition of "central", I quite like The Hoxton - and it's available on the dates you're after for an avg of GBP99 per night.

From Sep onwards, the hotel prices in NYC increase as you get closer to the end of the year.

I would check out Quikbook Hotels: Discount Hotel Reservations - New York and Other Cities for both NYC and Washington DC hotels. You can get some good rates on this site plus most of them are a 'book now, play later deal'. Additionally the cancellation policy is usually 24-48 hours before arrival. If you find anything cheaper in the mean time, then you can cancel the bookings easily.

I would suggest you also sign up with Select Your Site for NYC deals.

For London, check out the Travelodges. Sign up for their newsletters and keep a look out on their website. They regularly have rooms selling for GBP29 per night. The trick with these room types is to book each night separately to get the cheaper rate. When you have them all booked, then contact the hotel to link your bookings so you can stay in the same room.

Can recommend Jury's Normandy Inn, just up the road from Dupont Circle, in the district known as Kalorama. The rack rate is around $US 200 per night, which isn't worth it, but they frequently have sales of around $US 100 per night, which is definitely worth it. It's extremely quiet... you'll have to walk a few blocks to get to a restaurant. Walking down the hill to Dupont Circle takes about 10 minutes. Walking across to Adams Morgan seemed to take about 15 minutes, and there are lots places to eat there. Dupont Circle is the closest metro stop.

You have a mountain of choice in NYC.

I would personally avoid Priceline & Hotwire at all costs.

I would suggest going with the Hampton Inn rather than the Hilton Garden. The hotels chains are very similar except with the Hampton your getting free breakfast. They are all over NYC.
