A four-star hotel will be built at Canberra Airport, five minutes' walk from the gate lounges, becoming a key factor in attracting international flights.

The airport management will construct and own the building and the chosen operator will be able to brand it.

Airport managing director Stephen Byron said the building would be stylish, befitting a gateway site. ''We are looking for a striking design,'' he said.

He is in talks with national operators who are interested in running the 180-room hotel.

Looks like an idea whose time has come. I reckon the government rate will be the same as allowed for in Agency travel budgets. Those agencies who have offices at Brindabella Park will be big users as well.

Now the most important question for us here on AFF, who will run it?

Maybe this is the time for the Double Tree brand to enter the Canberra market?

Long overdue. The location - beside the servo - means it's just an easy walk to the terminal. If they put in a covered walkway it would help mitigate the winter cold and the summer sun and the rare rain.

Also an excellent location for travellers wanting to take the first flight out on a foggy morning, but not keen on the early morning taxi that generally involves, especially for those in the more distant suburbs.

I'm surprised it's taken so long, actually.

I put my money on the Hotel Realm group ending up running it...

I would have thought Doma and the Snow family are competitors to an extent, my guess would be a Mecure given accord push into Airports, with NTL soon to have one.

Good news, be great if it was a Doubletree or Starwood.
Agree with pauly7, great for that early morning flight on the HBA Express. :)

You guys know Canberra much better than me but apart from the Hobart Express is there a real need for a hotel near the airport?

As CBR is not a hub I would have thought there was no real requirement for people to have an overnight transit there unless of course people drive from the West somewhere to begin an international itinerary.

Interesting question John - I know a lot of my mates fly to CBR to lobby the government and fly back out on the red eye - they certainly would use the airport hotel... Imagine a few more in that boat.

And there are large commuter communities at Goulburn and Yass which are just far enough away that an airport hotel is viable, especially for the first flight of the morning.
