Hotel near State Theatre Sydney (49 Market St)

I have a two part question.

1. Some friends and I will be going to the State Theatre Sydney which is on Market St. I'm after recommendations for hotels that are walking distance or easy train access from the Theatrte. Doesn't have to be fancy, but also not a backpacker hostel. No more than $250/night. Bonus points (heh) if it can be booked on Qantas Hotels.

2. Anyone familiar with the theatre? I'm thinking we get seats either in the Stalls or on the Mezzanine. It's for an orchestral performance.

How price-sensitive versus fancy-sensitive?
I ask because Swissôtel Sydney is directly across the road (easy to miss if you're not looking for it!) and they did a major reno in the last few years so it's quite fancy. But doubt it's near inexpensive, being "5-star" & "luxury".

I don't remember enough about seats we've had in the past to suggest where to sit, except that when you're on the "ground floor" it can feel a little closed-off when you're under the next level up (which isn't indicated on the maps) - still good view & it sounds fine though. I don't remember sitting anywhere with a bad view, although try to be within the middle 75% of any row.

Hilton is pretty much next door for memory and the Swissotel is across the road but no idea on price

As others have said, Swissotel, directly opposite. QT, in the same building. Hilton, just around the corner. However you will get nothing for the price you indicate. I always stop at the Swissotel where I can get rooms at ~ $320 on a Friday or Saturday (sometimes!)
The tram stop on George street is perhaps 50mtrs from the theatre and for the price you want you might need to go down towards Chinatown, World square, central station areas where you will find some Accor, IHG properties amongst others

I had a quick squizz at Wotif just to see what's around for that money, not knowing when the booking's wanted for I chose next Wednesday.

It might also depend on what the dinner plans are, but for example the Rydges on the eastern side of Central was $236 for a king double (and has Sydney Brewery under it & not far from all the Surry Hills eateries including Firedoor just behind it). I'd prolly catch the tram to there, even if it's likely 10min longer than the train.
But it looks like a clean 4-star with good reviews is certainly doable, particularly if harbour views aren't needed.

Thanks all. We're not fussed about being directly opposite the theatre, so a 15 min walk or a quick tax/uber is fine.

I am not as price sensitive as my companions, so I'm trying to keep it on the lower end. I'd love to stay at the Swissotel, I'll check with my mates

Oh yeah, we stayed there after our wedding in 2009, was a very nice room & pretty pleasant.

Only about 1 diagonal block away, under cover of awnings most of the way should it be raining.

In that case, I'm told the Italian restaurant which is now occupying the place the Red Oak Beer Cafe used to be, is good. Not been there myself: Palazzo Salato

Actually that part of Sydney, a few blocks around it, seems to be the part which has survived the COVID Cull the best. Places like the Baxter Inn, and in the same block as the aforementioned Italian joint (except a lot of bar & restaurant entrances are on Clarence ... eg. Kuro restaurant, and a few bars like Lobo and Papa Geddes).

Some left field options. The Holiday Inn or Indigo Potts Point (aka Kings Cross) are both close the KX train station (the HI is literally on top of it) and it’s two quick stops to Town Hall station and a short stroll to the theatre. They can be had for sub $200 on some nights.

As mentioned earlier, there’s also things the other way. There’s a Mercure at Central which is a shirt tram or train ride to Town Hall.

The new Metro line opens in August - which could also open up some options.

Amora Jamison is nearby. I’ve stayed there several times, good quality. You can get two nights on Luxury Escapes now for $460. Excellent value for Sydney.

It's just a few mates and I traveling down from Newcastle for a show and some drinks. I prefer to stay the night rather than getting back at 1am.

The show is Nobuo Uematsu's conTIKI show if anyone's interested.

I ended up going with Rydges Darling Square. Recently refurbished rooms look good. $230/night with free cancellation up to a day before. 11 minute walk.
