HKG or SIN - Your Preference?

I don't want to start a discussion about "Fresh" Air vs Filtered Air Conditioning, but I do like the outdoor Cactus Garden at Changi's T1. I like to get some fresh air before a long flight.

I live in BNE so perhaps the climate in SIN is less of a problem for me.

My preference would be SIN, so much to do and so easy to spend a few hours there.

HKG I've only been a couple of times but don't remember much at all.

DXB is right on the bottom of my list of airports, absolutely cannot stand that place.
Thought I would use my priority pass to get into the lounges to avoid the huge crowds but even they were quite crowded, though still better than the normal terminal.

I'm only considering all these as an economy passenger though.

Have never been to HKG so SIN wins by default. That said, it's one of the few airports I can think of where a lack of lounge access/other FF perks wouldn't be missed when travelling in Y. It's a place that's actually pleasant to be in.

Cruiser, the poster clearly is flying an LCC into HKG - otherwise they'd already be on the airport express on the way home...

Lost count of how many times I've been to Hong Kong, its a clean vibrant city with old and new, safe, lots to see if you wish. Regal Airport hotel is attached to international terminal for over nighters, good size rooms. Transit to city via fast train and city departure check in another bonus. Its also a great point to depart onwards to USA and Europe with numerous direct flights and i've found J award seats from HKG usually available.

Thread intent was Airport only
They are both ok and I've had plenty of experience at both with many airlines over the years.

One thing I don't like about HKG is transit security can take a while and I'm also slightly disoriented downstairs relative to gates and lounges. Not a deal breaker though.

Would it be fair to say majority of those favouring HKG are regular OW carrier pax? Those favouring SIN are regular SQ / *A pax - stating the bleeding obvious no doubt.

Whilst I have transmitted SIN like 1,000 times and only ever been through HKG half doz times I just find layout of HKG so confusing whilst I found layout of SIN so straightforward. As always YMMV. It all makes up the rich tapestry of life huh and most importantly as we all travel safely and enjoy our travels.

Just curious. Which part of HKG is confusing? I am fairly equal between HKG and SIN (HKG was home for some time though). I actually find SIN confusing, things are in corners, behind pillars, upstairs. Looking around you doesn't help because the main area isn't in a straight line. Even the gates aren't lined up.

HKG you have reference points from outside, the gates or just looking at the roof. HKG is just a Y terminal and the main oval when you clear security.

I do like SIN for the paid food options though.

I find it confusing trying to find Lounges. Do you find T1 in SIN confusing? Can be cause layout a bit like HKG. :D

probably true in terms of alliances & preferences - it probably would come out the same between residents of the 2 cities and their personal preferences also...

LH flights tend to get bad gates I think (have only ever seen them out on the far piers) - some would probably consider them an LCC these days ;)

nonetheless my comment on the Airport Express still stands - SIN really has no proper rapid mass transit solution into the city.

their gate handling can be as wonky as HKG too also so probably not much in it there even once the terminal train is factored in.

In HKG, even the likes of CX can run out of gates to use. Some time back, my friend on a CX SYD-HKG flight had to deboard using stairs and buses.

Singapore train to city is a joke. 5000 stops, change trains, not friendly if you have baggage etc. It's simply not comfortable or practical.

Hong Kong has the perfect airport train system. Free bus to/from most hotels, fast and comfortable train, free wifi and the train arrives directly into the departures area (unlike singapore which is underground).

I prefer Singapore as an airport to travel through, but Hong kong is the clear winner for the airport as a (non flying) place to meet up, eat etc and access to downtown area.

HKG for me, and yes I am almost exclusively OW in my travels. I like the multiple transfer points and enjoy the CX F Lounges.

Singapore train to city is a joke. 5000 stops, change trains, not friendly if you have baggage etc. It's simply not comfortable or practical....

In contrast, I like the Singapore metro because fares are cheap, the transfer at Tanah Merah is super easy: just across the platform, one normally obtains a seat out of Changi and not all of us are going to the CBD.

The stations I use have lifts, so it's easy to have a wheeled suitcase and a carry-on backpack. Trains run about every six minutes, so while it isn't express like Hong Kong, it's still by far the best way to get to and from Changi unless one's hotel is a long way from a railway station.

The only annoying feature is the prohibition on any food or drink (including, illogically, water, even more a necessity in a tropical climate - probably to eliminate the 'risk' of someone discarding a water bottle on board.)

But to answer the question, SIN wins hands down. I am another one who considers HKG has a confusing layout that is user-unfriendly.

DXB, AUH and DOH are at the absolute bottom of the pack.

Agree with Melburnian1 (although I've never been to Hong Kong). Much prefer a regular train service at a humane price than some rip off operator that thinks that just because their service involves an airport means that they can charge whatever they like. It's also fairly frequent, which is more important than an express service in my opinion.

Would much prefer the Singapore model for whenever MEL finally gets a train service.
