Want to see Melbourne like you've never seen it before? Welcome to the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf - showcasing a new perspective of the city.

Hilton Melbourne South Wharf is under construction and due to open in the first quarter of 2009.

Located in South Wharf, an area set to become Melbourne’s newest business and dining precinct, with hassle free access from the airport (with only 2 traffic lights along the way!) and the shortest of strolls across the many bridges that connect South Bank and South Wharf to Docklands and the city centre. Hilton Melbourne South Wharf will offer hotel, residential and day guests direct access to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre’s state-of-the-art conference, events and meeting facilities, complemented by Hilton’s renowned world-class business service, experience and facilities.

Experience the dramatic open kitchen and sublime modern Spanish cuisine of Nuevo 37 restaurant. Discover spectacular wine and charcuterie towers, a relaxing riverside terrace, intimate booths and bustling communal tables at Sotano Wine and Tapas bar.

Guest rooms are spacious and serene. Full length windows infuse each room with light and provide stunning skyline views. Oversized bathrooms are calming and luxurious. Suites feature double-aspect panoramas, while top floor apartments are fully self-contained. Executive Floor guests enjoy the private Executive Lounge, with an expansive terrace that floats over the Yarra.

Looks good, and seems closer to walk to the city from South Wharf than HOTP.

Yes looks good but I would hate to think what sort of room rates they will be charging especially since it is a brand new building. Could be one place to use the $99/night HPC certificate....

...except I don't have one. :(

Ah well. It may be new and in a much better position than OTP, but I can't imagine them putting out gouging rates unless it was really, really warranted.

Hilton rates are Hilton rates.

Now that I think about it, Google Maps doesn't give a good indication of the site location, but it seems pretty close to the docks and a freeway. I wonder how this will impact on the dynamics of its location (e.g. noise etc.) As an example, one thing about, say Hilton Sydney, is that it's not a bad location but of course the walls aren't exactly sound proof and even if you are on the Exec floor which is oodles of metres above the ground, nothing can block out the yahooing and horning of the nightlife at the street level. Not a huge issue (certainly out of the control of the hotel), but you have to wonder how people design and/or situate new hotels...... All I was really interested was that was it very accessible to the city, or at least the Melbourne South Bank.

I heard from one of my friends who works at the Westin that this new Hilton is only going to be 4 star

Anyone here heard the same?

Mel Apt IIRC is 4*; OTP is 4.5*.

If this is only going to be 4* that's rather interesting. On the other hand, Hilton may be targeting a more specific demographic. And some things can't be measured with stars (as I've found out in the course of my travels).

Whether this is a good move or not is debatable.

I guess it depends upon who does the star ratings :!:

I've seen a lot of +ve and -ve hotels when compared to their 'star' ratings.

Most are done by AAA Tourism, but some (such as the Hilton) are self rated.

In my opinion hotel star ratings are totally overrated especially for the lower class hotels.

Most times I do not bother looking at a hotels star rating. I have stayed in some very ordinary 3-4 star hotels which in my opinion were totally overrated. And I have stayed in 1-2 star hotels which would leave a lot of 3-4 star hotels well behind. YMMV!

Much agreed.

Star ratings don't seem to manifest themselves very well in terms of the quality of the accommodation. It seems to only imply what a hotel should have (viz. facilities etc.). One tries to draw a causal link between the stars of the hotel and the quality of the services offered (as the assumption is that it is folly for a hotel to undertake the offering of that many services if it cannot deliver on them at least satisfactorily), but often the lines are still blurred.

This kind of dawned on me when I was having a drink one time at a hotel bar, and the bartender contended that he was working in the only 5 star hotel in the city. I asked him about some other places and his response was that they don't have this or that. He didn't actually say if it had anything to do with the quality of the services.

It's probably more interesting to compare hotels with similar price points for quality etc.

I think it wil be great for Melbourne to have this Hilton open. Wonder if the HTOP will continue as a Hilton, or be taken over by Accor?

It would seem to me that the 3 room categories shown are the same size but just higher floors with more amenities. One wonders is this enough?

Introductory rates certainly don't sound too special. Would think I could do better at the Westin, and even more so using Starwood Privilege.
