Hilton Honors Status Question

Thanks to AFF and the MVP fast track I'm now only 2 stays away from HH Gold. I have those two planned, plus a further two stays after I reach gold. (ie 4 in all)

I'm wondering if the system recognises status when you book a stay. So if I book my 3rd & 4th stay now while silver, will I have less chance of upgrades than if I wait and book when I'm gold?

Or is it all done at check in and the status at time of booking is not relevant?

I believe it's all done the day before your stay.

They need to check your program information for VIP options etc. (Upgrade or Points); so the hotel should become aware of your current status at the same time.
