HH Gold here, planning a trip to NYC and LAX.
Thinking of Hilton Garden Inn or Doubletree in Manhattan but they are expensive ($300+ incl taxes).
Might be worth it if I have an upgrade.
Anyone been there and stayed there? Worth the extra $?

Unfortunately I can't answer your question xt_20 - have not been to NYC myself but am planning a trip soon. I too would appreciate members' views on these or other Hilton hotels in NYC.

HGI (West 54th??) is ideal if you are doing Broadway shows, well worth the price IMHO.
Not going to get anything cheap in Manhattan but if you have HH points, may want to check the Points+Cash option, I got the Millenium Hilton opposite the WTC site for US$85+25,000points per night.

2 years ago I, my wife and daughter stayed at the Hilton DoubleTree on W 29th St, between 6th & 7th Ave.

It had only recently been renovated, so everything was quite new. The room was typical NY - on the small side - but given you're usually out and about during the day & evening it's fine.

I can't recall the rate, but given it was 2 years ago not really relevant now.

We found the location pretty well perfect for what we wanted. Walking distance to 5th Avenue & Empire State Building, a Metro station on the corner of W 28th & 7th, and easy walking distance to Penn Station (as we were catching the Amtrac to Washington at the end of the week).

Given it's so easy to get around on the subway it's one I would recommend.

Which Hilton Garden Inn are you interested in? I would probably choose them over the Doubletree. The free HH Gold breakfasts at the Times Square location are really great. The West 35th location is also a nice stay.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Which Hilton Garden Inn are you interested in?

The one at West 35th street due to its location.

Also looking at the Hilton Fashion district which seems to be about 20 minutes walk from there and similar pricing.

I am also planning a NYC trip and looking at options for Feb next year. Have you looked at Double Tree times square? the price for the time I am going seems reasonable. Comes in at $325 with taxes included in that price and this price also has double base points or I can get the AAA rate for $283 all up, which I assume I can get with NRMA membership. I suppose double base points with diamond bonus is the way to go.

It depends how you value the base points. Double base points rates only means an 10 more points per dollar you're probably only going to get about an extra 2500 to 2800 points per day, for about $42 extra dollars per day. The diamond bonus won't be counted on the double points - only on the base points. Given you can buy HHonors points for US 1c/point, it's probably only worth it if you have an insanely good HHonors redemption deal you can use.

Thanks for this. So I had a look at this and here are my calcs. For a 5 night stay room costs are $1,385 before the taxes (taxes $321.78), for the best available rate that gives you double BASE points. The AAA rate is $1,210.50 before the taxes, (taxes $206.05) So the difference is $174.50 before taxes and $200.24 after taxes..

Best Available rate with double Base Points 1,385 x 10 = 13,850 x 2 = 27,700 plus diamond status (another 50%) 13,850 = 41,550
AAA Rate 1,385 x 10 = 13,850 plus diamond status (another 50%) 6,925 = 20,775

The difference is that you get 20,7750 more points that would cost you $207.75 at US 1c/point compared to saving $200.24. I suppose it comes down to personal preference like you said is their a good deal to redeem on, I have not redeemed before so it would be nice to get a few more points and knowing that somewhere along the line I have a free night in the future possibly without having to pay then but paying now. The other thing is that is a good amount of base points to count towards Diamond re-qualify.

If my calcs are wrong please let me know.

There are just a couple of things to think about in relation to what they mean by "double base points".

Best Available rate with double Base Points 1,385 x 10 = 13,850 x 2 = 27,700 plus diamond status (another 50%) 13,850 = 41,550
AAA Rate 1,385 x 10 = 13,850 plus diamond status (another 50%) 6,925 = 20,775

It depends what they mean by "double base points". I would want to make sure that when they say "double base points", you are being assigned base points and base points plus a bonus equivalent to base points. I am the first to admit that I don't yet have familiarity with the New York hotels, but in other promotions, they've mentioned that when they say "double base points" or "quadruple base points", they actually mean bonus points:

"Double Base Points" means you will receive a bonus equal to the number of Base Points earned during a stay. Bonus Points earned on Base Points do not count toward VIP tier qualification.

And this: https://www.hiltonhhonors.com/landi...E0US1HN2REP3Sunday4HHonors10Q45EN7Print840451

“Quadruple Base Points” means you will receive a maximum bonus of four-times the number of Base Points earned during a stay. Bonus Points earned on Base Points do not count toward VIP tier qualification.

If this is the case, then "Double Base Points" may not actually mean "Double Base Points" and so the Diamond bonus and the Elite Qualification Points may be no higher than a normal stay on the AAA rate.

Thanks again, I think you are right. I can't find anywhere where it has specific terms of base points like your links. All I can find it this;

[h=2]Rate details DBL HHONORS BASE PTS[/h]
DOUBLE HHONORS BASE POINTS HHONORS NUMBER REQUIRED AT CHECK-IN
It might be best taking the AAA rate and putting that $200 towards something else. I may get lucky and they may even run a double or triple points promo for that quarter like this current one.

beardoc, thanks again for letting me know this re. the double base points, I rang and confirmed it was as you said. I re-booked AAA rate and cancelled the earlier booking so save a couple hundred which will be well used, cheers.

No worries! Happy to help. It's just awful feeling when you find out too late something isn't as you think it is, and you feel a little duped. Good to avoid that.

With HHonors promotion such as these it's always been the case since I joined last decade.

e.g. With a base spend of US$100 (and ignoring all other status, Myway or other promotional points that might be earned) -

  • "Double base points" returns your base points of 1000 HHonors points and a promotion bonus of 1000 HHonors points.

  • "Triple base points" returns your base points of 1000 HHonors points and a promotion bonus of 2000 HHonors points.

  • "Quadruple base points" returns your base points of 1000 HHonors points and a promotion bonus of 3000 HHonors points.

In all cases, only the initial 1000 base points earn would contribute toward any status qualification.
