High Sierra Rolling Backpack (carry on)

I have searched for this topic, but there is no mention of this particlar carry on mentioned. I posted the same request at FT a few days ago, and did not receive a reply so maybe someone in this forum might be able to assist. Hereunder is what I posted on FT.

I have been researching a carry on for several weeks, and have looked closely at the Antler carry on, which seems to be the lightest of all that I have seen. Then I recently went to the mall and inspected the High Sierra Rolling Backpack 22", and with the daypack removed it appears to meet the carry on requirements set by all carriers. I know that it meets the airline requiremens, but I need to know if any OP have owned/used the High Sierra Rolling Backpack 22", did it meet their expectations for size as a carry on, durability etc. I need a bag for a 3 week (carry on only) trip in August 08 to USA and looking at options. I have searched the forum, but nothing on this particular type of backpack.

I have a 22" High Sierra rollaboard - not the backpack though.

Dimensionally they look about the same size.

I managed a 10 day RTW with this a few months ago, including a pair of size 12 steel capped shoes stuffed in the case.

If traveling in the US you will find that a 22" rollaboard is relatively small compared to what gets carried on board.

I do not have the High Sierra Rolling Backpack - 22", but looking at the dimension of the case without the backpack, it is slightly in excess of the QF Domestic limit, but within the international carry on limits. I would expect you would get away with it on a domestic flight, unless they start cracking down on it.

It is about 750g heavier than the Antler Eliptiq 46cm (which I have), but it is also a little bigger - which will encourage you to take more and may make you more likely to exceed the 7kg weight limit .

For me, I have a separate backpack as I need it to be my laptop bag and I would not expect the daypack with this to be well suited to that role. The key things I considered when making my decision were:

• weight
• size (I needed it to comply with Domestic size limits as I often need to transit through Syd)
• purpose - Antler for clothes, Targus backpack for laptop and work stuff.

Sorry if it seems like I am telling you the obvious - just sharing my thoughts...

I'm exactly the same as you... have the same Antler suitcase (on your recommendation), and also a company issued Targus backpack..

Thanks for your replies. I looked at the Antler Translite Cabin Roller Suitcase, and other Antler products mainly because of their light weight manufacture, however, I have decided to buy the High Sierra backpack and I am aware that it is slightly bigger than the QF measurements for domestic travel, but with this bag being a soft sided bag you can squeeze it in a little to fit. In any event I want a bag for international travel.

I cant quite comment on the exact piece that you are talking about but i can comment on the durability of the brand. I have a laptop backpack with them and its been everywhere i have for the last 3 months and so far hasnt shown any signs of wear and tear. Having said that my only gripe is that fact that there are so many pockets that its hard to tell where to put everything at first thought.

I can also quote on the durability of High Sierra travel gear. I took a risk and bought a larger rollerboard/ backpack conversion for a rtw trip 18 months ago.

I'm still using it on o/s trips and no visible wear or tear yet. This case went through rough baggage handlers, up footpaths and curbs through cities and up and down many subway/ unerground flights of stairs.

You definately get your value on this brand, and they're not that expensive!

The High Sierra AT205 model is a 22" wheeled backpack, but today I purchased the newer 405 model which has a slightly bigger removable daypack. The 205 was selling at www.luggageprofessionals.com.au at Crows Nest for $145 and the 405 I purchased cost a little more at $205, however, I am pleased with the manufacture/strength of the bag and I think this will do me nicely for future o/s trips, and although it does not meet the size requirements for domestic flights I have another smaller bag for that in any event.
