New member here for 3-5 yrs relo family from USA. We're hoping to use this great resource and community to maximize our exploration of this amazing quadrant of the planet! Our family loves to travel.

Hoping to determine which local/regional airlines to throw our lot in with, the Mrs is deep in American Airlines and I'm heavy into Delta, so she's leaning Qantas and I'm a free agent ;). We use Amex Platinum and Chase Sapphire cards heavily so looking to maximize those, and are frequenters of thepointsguy.com for tips/tricks. Thanks for having us.

Welcome to AFF @cemeek .

An American Airlines member signing up to Qantas locally sounds sensible, ( notwithstanding the horrors that QF are going through at the moment) especially if they hold status on AA.

If you’re a free agent to me it would make sense to then sign up to Virgin velocity. Although they’ve dumped their Delta partnership and are not a member of any large alliance, they are growing their international network with relationships with United and Qatar. Some rebranding and hints of an ‘announcement’ may mean a closer tie-up with other Virgin franchises, which may be handy overseas if you get status on VA and the status becomes reciprocal.

Great intel thank you. Bummer about Delta. I do need to figure out best options for Japan and NZ, Virgin still or another?

If you are going to do regular flying to Japan and NZ, then Qantas (JAL being in OneWorld and ANZ Airpoints being such a bad program). @Mattg would have better intel.

Another warm welcome @cemeek
If you haven't already been through a domestic QF lounge, your jaw will drop when you compare them to the AA lounges.

In a good way I hope? AA lounges back in the states are pretty good to decent enough. I presume you mean QF lounges are way better!

Yep generally better compared to the regular AA lounges (excluding the flagship lounges).

Yes, Qantas lounges are pretty good - open bar and no tipping, for one thing! :) Catering can be a bit hit-and miss these days, though.

Virgin lounges aren't bad, either ...
