Hertz Gold (simply a registration exercise, saves time at pick-up) - stacked with:
* AAA (NRMA, RACV or other auto club membership, for reduced excess and modest discount);
* ANZ gold+ AMEX (or similar providing all important rental rectal car excess coverage, plus points); and
* VVA (or Hertz Rewards or airline points option).
I also bought an $80 GPS unit three years ago, which was paid for after two occasions where I didn't need to add one to my rental.
The one bit of tinkering I usually do (because it pays off) is checking for difference between airport and city pick-up / drop-off. Corporate locations versus franchises can also be worth comparing.
I find I usually get nice rates with this approach in AUS, NZ, CAN or US and I don't get caught up in the excess reduction trap (while still being sufficiently covered).
