Hi all,

I've tentatively reserved a Mercedes E220 diesel sedan for 16 days in late July and August. Total price of EUR840 (~AU $1200), which is about half a C class and a quarter of an Audi A6. Supposedly guaranteed make/model. Downside is limited km (4,500/250 a day).

Anyone had any experience with Hertz CDG? Anything I should watch out for?

Unfortunately I no longer have status with hertz (was 5 star for a couple of years).

Not sure I need a car for the whole time, but would be nice to drive!

Bump!

Hi all,

My trip commences this weekend, so just wondering whether anyone has any tips?

Given my rate is about one quarter of the usual rate, has anyone had issues with this being not honoured?

Thanks in advance.

Suggest you do a search of Paris car hire at Trip Advisor - all the pitfalls (and scams) of various rental agencies seem to surface there.

The rate you got does seem too good to be true so I guess you have to ask why the rate is seemingly so far below market.
My doubts would be even higher if the car wasn't booked through Hertz direct or through a reputable broker.

Car was booked direct through Hertz via the Hertz Australia website a few months ago. Rate was available for at least a couple of weeks, after which it almost quadrupled and has stayed there since. I've spoken to Hertz Australia at least once (last week) to add a child seat and there were no issues. Hoping that renting direct from Hertz and being a Gold Plus Rewards member will mean no issues.

Didn't think of looking at Trip Advisor - will have a look. Thanks.

we hired a car at CDG and while it wasn't a flash European car, it was fine.
my first tip (if you've never been to CDG and hired a car before) is that it is a pain in the rear trying to get out of the airport. after 3 attempts , i finally worked it out.

A good sat nav / GPS is a must IMHO.
filling up with fuel is a nightmare when returning the car (unless you're doing a one way hire etc. check out the location before you leave the airport, it will save you time.

make sure you enter the spot you collect the car into your memory before you leave after collecting said car.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks for the tips. Car has built in GPS, so one less thing to worry about! Returning to CDG, so will try and pay attention to the service station location (might be difficult after 24 hours of travel with an infant!).

its really critical, because if you miss it, you're going to have to drive around again.
i thought there was a shell just before the airport, well i was half right, its' a truck station and unmanned , you need special cards to operate the pumps.

Apologies for joining the topic late, but your GPS should be able to guide you to the nearest to last gas station befoe the airport. Your trip is probably over by now, hope all went well. If you found CDG diffiuclt to navigate to and from, try Orly for a comparison!

Got back a couple of days ago!

GPS knew where the last service station was (we did a go around to get there!), but didn't know where the Hertz office was! To clarify, it directed us half way to the Hertz office!

To be honest, it wasn't that difficult - no more difficult than any other airport I've had to drive to, with refuel/return of hire car.

Having inbuilt GPS in the car was fantastic, especially with the huge screen it had.

On the subject of my original query, they didn't bat an eyelid at the rate of my rental, but there were numerous other issues when collecting the car.

Despite booking the car as a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards member many months in advance, car was not ready when we arrived at the booked time to collect it - we had to wait about 45 minutes. We'd booked an infant car seat, which turned out to be very basic and was not installed - they refused to assist with installation, so it took me about an hour to figure it out. Whilst I was figuring out the car seat, my partner had loaded our luggage into the car and we were ready to leave when I discovered the driver's seat headrest was at the lowest level and could not be raised - it appeared someone had forced it too low and broken it. As a very tall person (205cm/6'9"), this was not going to work (it dug into my shoulders) so after I tried to fix it for about 15 min, I asked for help from a staff member. He also tried and then said he'd call someone else to assist. After more waiting and following up, they eventually brought another car and after transferring everything to it and getting ready to leave (again!) the navigation and radio would not work. Staff member tried and couldn't get it to work. By now our patience was wearing thin! Manger personally brought a third car from the other terminal and apologised. Second car Nav then mysteriously worked and we decided to take that so we didn't have to transfer our luggage and car seat again. Manager knocked 50EUR off the rental, which was nice. Should've taken the third car as the one we took had a brake shudder and towards the end kept saying it needed oil.

As it turned out, another car (Golf) clipped the driver's wing mirror at 130km/h on the tollway and took off the cover and indicator (scared the cough out of us) and later the same day, I damaged the front bumper trying to get the car into a tight car park where we were staying in Provence. I again damaged the same spot on the bumper a couple of days later in another car park (French car parks are not designed for a car as big as an E class!). Expected a drama returning the car damaged, together with a charge of the EUR 2,500 excess, but return was a quick completion of an incident report and to my surprise, only a charge of EUR646 yesterday (a few days after return). Car is $100k here and I would've expected it to need a new bumper, which would be way more than EUR2,500 (AUD3,750).

Now have to submit my claim to travel insurer - all going well, I should only be out of pocket about $250.

Well, that was some experience, we've both probably read to keep an eye on your account as car hire groups seem to drop in subsequent bills from time to time. I've just been hit with A$45 odd for something I know nothing about from Europcar for a rental in France as well.
The car was a Golf, and the GPS was OK, but at times she had a mind of her own, and it took us a day or two find the menu setting for English translation. These little things are sent to try us!

Your post reminds me of two things:

GPS played up the last few days - it couldn't work out exactly where the car was and consequently gave us incorrect directions, trying to get is back into the road we were already on! Luckily I had Here maps loaded onto my phone as a back up.

I'm expecting a speeding ticket from France!

Great minds think alike. I had the Here map as well as Waze open on the iPad, which were good back-ups when the vehicle GPS couldn't cope. Similar problems with ours as with yours. Also similar problem with expectations of a ticket coming down from the Mont Blanc tunnel into France at the end of the trip! Not blaming any of the apps for that though.
