I am booked to do an Asia river cruise next August starting in Ho Chi Minh and returning from Siem Reap. I'd like to spend a few nights in KL, preferably on the way over. I'm not experienced with booking flights to Asia and would love suggestions on which airline or combination would be a good choice. I do have frequent flyer points with Virgin & Singapore Air but it's not essential to use either of those in preference to a more direct route. Can anyone help please?

Sorry that I cannot help with answering the question ... however, if I DID know what you'd like to find out, I would probably ask what your preferences were in terms of:
  1. cost - is cost the main thing?
  2. class of travel - see #1 I guess, or do you want to travel in business or premium economy?
  3. travel time - do you care how long it takes? [for example if you got a good fare traveling ANA but you had to go via Tokyo, would that be OK?]
Someone else might then be able to point you in the best direction. :)

For multiple cities and countries i would almost use a travel agent.
For a start go to google flights and see ehat comes up
You can go Jetstar to Vietnam from Sydney
Note KL is a MH hub which is one world.

Malaysia Airlines resumed Brisbane flights yesterday, so it's the easiest in one booking:
  • Brisbane to KL
then after a few nights
  • KL to Ho Chi Minh City
returning
  • Siem Reap to KL to Brisbane

Agreed. Was going to suggest MH. Alternatively could do SQ:

1. Brisbane-Singapore-KL on SQ
2. Then buy separate one way sector from KL-HCMC, there are four carriers operating on this route (2 legacy - Malaysia and Vietnam Airlines, 2LCC - Vietjet and Air Asia).
3. Siem Reap - Singapore - Brisbane on SQ
