After booking our first J flight QF31 SYD-SIN in October this year and working our way to Hon Kong we are now looking at buying a flight back to Sydney.

Don’t want to use points, other than for an upgrade, and both being Bronze is probably unlikely.

Looking at whY , there are flights on QF, CX and VS, all about the same price.

Is one superior to the other?

What I can say is that I flew CX Y from HKG to BNE a year ago and hated it.
I think the CX shell seats in Y are quite good for shorthaul, but the fact that they don't actually recline is, for me, terrible for a flight over 3-4 hours, especially if it is an overnight flight.

I did HKG-SYD last year on QF in Y, and thought quite highly of it (no J upgrades :(, although they had an issue with the flight the previous night, so the plane was pretty full reaccomodating pax)... It was an o'nighter, so we took off quite late, and got into SYD quite early...

They still did two meals (a late night dinner and an early morning brekky) which gave about 4 hours worth of sleep time inbetween...

This was on a QF B747...

We flew HKG-SYD in January on QF128. It was supposed to be a 744, but was substituted for an A333 (the A380 engine debacle was still influencing things), which put and end to my hope for a points upgrade to J, unfortunately (denied!). The plane was chockers.

Apart from sitting across the aisle from a french guy who looked like might die from some hideous flu-like illness at any moment, it was quite a good flight - we were in the bulkhead row in Y. Service was excellent I thought.

We had flown LHR-HKG on CX in Y a few days earlier. I will never fly CX Y again, until they change out those shell seats. Seriously, they are the work of the devil.

Really depends on a few things.

I see you're Bronze with QF, do you have Qantas Club? If so, you wont be able to access a lounge if flying CX. You'd only get access with QF (or BA/AA).

Also, I don't particularly like the new CX Y, QF's implementation of it is better as it allows some actual recline, while CX just moves your bottom forwards. If you're tall or big, it'll likely be uncomfortable to sleep, more so than QF's offering on the A380, but if you take a day flight, or are a bit smaller, there may be no hassles. CX does offer decent service though.

Also, if you're looking to earn points... you can earn them on the CX flight, but you'll have to be careful you book an eligible fare, as lots of their cheaper fares will not earn on QF.

Any thoughts on the odds of getting a points upgrade if we booked QF ?

VS is generally disliked among my circles, regarded as worse than the other two. Some people liked the CX shells, although they are generally quite short. QF is probably the best in terms of the seat, although services are usually regarded as relatively poor.

Also have a look at SQ via SIN. It's an additional 3 hours, but the prices can be very attractive at times. It is also possible to fly on the A380 for both legs on SQ, if that's your thing. Other airlines such as Malaysian can have very good prices at times too if you don't mind a transfer. My friend flew one-way SIN-KUL-SYD last night for $480 AUD-equivalent - not quite HKG-SYD, but it's similar.

Service on my CX HKG-BNE flight was pretty bad. I had to wait 45 mins for an eye-mask, and that was after asking 3 different FAs.

A few friends have reported good service experience on QF Y lately.

I'd be surprised if CX is much better in terms of Y soft product.

Avoid the CX shell seats if contemplating a night flight at all costs.

VS is more than acceptable for this sector, they also have a sale on ex HK at present.
