Yeah, i have caught Qantas to Europe before, or Qatar, and then while in Europe flown EasyJet and Ryan Air for all my flights... Definitely done the bit about putting on several layers of clothing and choosing the heaviest footwear etc because you start of near the 20kg limit on QF when leaving Oz and then start adding maps and other paraphernalia as you travel round over 4-6 weeks... Wearing a jacket with some big pockets can also be handy for stuffing Lonely Planet guides and other heavy items, wear your camera round your neck, carry on your netbook in your hand... But the idea about going and grabbing another shopping/duty free bag is handy...
Would do it if it saved me $30 or so in excess baggage... Times by however many flights you will be taking whilst overseas... Sorry if that doesn't sound high brow enough to qualify me as a real frequent flyer, but there are ways to avoid getting stung badly, whilst also using a bit of restraint when packing...
