I've just attained Silver and need an additional 320 Status credits by 31 August 2014 for Gold. I'm thinking of doing some SC runs ex-SYD to try for Gold. These runs will be paid fares as I don't have many points. Open to any suggestions. I suppose I should try to travel before 1 July before the programme changes take effect?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

There are threads that answer your question but the basic thing we need to help is your origin.

Of course you need to decide if the cost is worth it rather than paying for Qantas club.

320 status credits is a large amount to get with paid tickets. For example, SYD-MEL return in Business is $1K plus and would only get you only 80SC. The question is, then, what benefit does SG gives you that the $$ you plan to spend on flights to obtain SG would not? I suggest you save your money from status run flights and directly "buy" any benefit SG might give you (such as QP membership) - it would cost a lost less.

SYD - AKL in EK F, total fare, I did do a chase, of about 320 points I think I saw.
But the QFF website, is a bit moody, sometimes it will allow booking in First, from SYD - AKL in EK First, sometimes it says First is not available SYD - AKL.
Have a look at the QFF website anyway.
Can you afford Aud$2480? Thats the fare QF is asking for an EK F class seat... I have not checked SC earning side, but I think it will get close to 320 SC.
Just checked, nak, you would still be 120 short, SYD - AKL in EK F, is 240 return, I thought it was 360, guess that was prior to Jul.

Then another trip, would be SYD - BNE in Flex J, earning 45 one way, 90 return. And pick the 14.05 SYD dep for BNE, as its the only 330 flying the route, if you do want to do it, do it in style, wide!
Add that to the above, SYD - AKL in F, and thats equals 240.
Total, 330.
Not cheap!

Where are you based?

SYD-AKL return on LAN in business costs ~AUD750 and earns 160 SCs. Out on Saturday morning and back on Sunday morning. Motel near AKL airport is ~NZD69 and a VB 6pack from bottle shop nearby is ~NZD10. Free shuttle to/from AKL airport.

SC earning after July changes to 120 SCs.

Fair points and thank you.

That's why I thought I'd start a thread as all advice is appreciated!

I'd just buy a QC membership until you accumulate points and do a status run during a DSC offer (if they ever offer them again :-|)

Pre 30 June 14, a JASA SYD-BNE-SIN return will get you 320SC. However, while it is worthwhile doing if you have the points (120k + approx $650) it would be around $6K if you had to pay for it. Ask yourself how much travelling am I going to do that would justify that spend.

A JASA SYD-BNE-TSV return is 48K points and around $280 and will net you 200 SC pre 30 June. It goes down to 160pts post 30 June.

Given your lack of points, I think you'd be better off just paying for a QC membership though.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Seems like I should just save my money (at least until there is a DSC promo!). Thanks everyone.
