Help in Booking on Points

Re: Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

You could always buy a return fare Aust to HKG & use points HKG/CDG/HKG on CX as a partner award. I don't think 250K points is enough for 2 x J return but you could go one way in Y or PE then J on the return.

There are always credit card sign up offers that give you 50K bonus points so that might get you a bit closer to a J return ticket.

Just to add - ANZ are offering 50,000 pts sign on bonus for a Qantas Frequent Flyer credit card, with no annual fee for the first year, so one for you and one for wife is a quick 100K points - enjoy.

Thanks Roger. I already have an ANZ card, but will see if I can get another one. I have got my wife signing for the bonus 50,000 :)

Just make sure you have had activity on your account in the last 18 months or your points get wiped so I hope you shop at Woollies with your EDR card.

.

Yes Oz, we shop at Woolies and use our EDR. We have 2 woolies within 500 meteres, so it is very handy.

Re: Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

So as not to confuse Deno, an upgrade would not be that expensive.

Points + Pay, now that's a different story.

While it may be confusing, Points + Pay is actually an ASA.

Re: Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

I think you will find Points + Pay to be VERY expensive. Have a look at Classic Awards but I doubt you have enough points for 2 x J fares.

You might want to consider buying an upgradeable fare and then hoping for the upgrade.

Quite achievable if you want to burn 2 million points !!

I was coming from the angle that Deno might think an upgrade will burn 2 million points.

Re: Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

I think you'll find that there are a few here who would disagree with that statement.

AFF version of an Any Seat Award - JASA etc was an award ticket where (up to 30 Jun for bookings) it was booked in the award fare buckets of P, U, Z & X classes for travel in First, Business, Premium Economy & Economy class whereby the points required were the same or sometimes less than the Classic award rates but the airline fees, charges & taxes were perhaps 25% more than a Classic. ASA's earned SC & points whereas Classics do not.

Qantas version of an any seat award - is really the ability to use a combination of points and/or cash to pay for an retail fare they advertise on the QF site - nothing really 'award' about it at all.

It's easier to think of it as 'points & pay' but usually don't represent good value as it's often cheaper just to purchase the fare outright & hold on to the points for upgrades on eligible fares or Classic or Partner awards in the true sense.

There are a few here who may be confused between a mASA and an ASA. Any cash fare that can be paid in points partially or fully is an ASA according to QF.

My bolding - and there is the rub as QF have conveniently changed what an ASA is without actually changing the T&Cs (AFAIK). ozbeachbabe's answer is more complete and picks up on the fact that P+P is hardly an award!!

I know what you are saying, however, an Any Seat Award (ASA) has never been exclusive to classic award buckets aka marginal ASA (mASA), therefore has always included points plus pay as a variant of an ASA. I agree that they are hardly rewarding, however the T&Cs haven't changed.

I am very close to points for a J class flight HKG/CDG/HKG or HKG/Frankfurt/HKG, but even far out as this time next year, the availability looks limited. If I booked dates, and had to change them later, is it:
A - Possible to change dates on an partner award, or is the choice limited?
B - Will this incur a fee?

At this stage, there are NO seats available in August 2015, for the dates I want, which amazes me.

A - yes if there's availability

B - award change fee in points applies

Are you looking online or calling up? CX availability appears and disappears from online quite regularly. Might be worth a call.

Thanks comeflywithme. I have only been using online. I will give them a ring if there are none there next time I check.

Thanks.
