ok looks like Im going to go ahead with the citibank platinum card with 20,000 points. Rather than take a supplimentary card for $90 Im am going to opt to take a separate card for my partner for a total of 40,000 points which leaves me 2,500 points shy of my target 256,000 which I should make up easily in the next month.

So is 40,000 points for $500 my best option? (actually $460 as there is a $20 cashback with creditcardfind.com.au)

This hasn't been mentioned yet but it is easier to just purchase 1 ticket and use points for the other.

In terms of which one method is more value, it could be become quite expensive to earn 68,000 points (factoring in credit card annual fees, monthly spends etc) however one needs to sit down and work it all out.

Also you need to factor in availability of redemption seats. It would really be disappointing to earn those additional 68,000 points, which could take another few months into 2010 and then realise when you have accumulated enough points to book, there aren't any seats.
